The 8 Best Online Shopping Sites for Cheap Electronics

sites-cheap-electronics

If you’re prepared to shop around, you can almost always save money on whatever you want to purchase. It’s no different with electronics.

If you want to find cheap electronics and tech, you should check out these eight websites and online electronic stores.

1. TechBargains

techbargins homepage

Sometimes, it’s hard to know whether you’re truly getting a good deal on something. There are just too many sites to check; you’ll never know if you missed a lower price.

If you’re looking for the best deals on electronics, TechBargains is the answer. It scours hundreds of stores, discount outlets, and third-party retailers to offer you some of the cheapest deals you’ll find.

The computing section is extensive. The site offers laptops, desktops, printers, routers, and more. You will also find wearables, smart home gear, gaming consoles, and audio devices.

Away from tech, the company does offer a few other smaller categories such as home and garden, but the deals aren’t as eye-catching. For even better deals, sign up to the TechBargains’ newsletter.

2. Slickdeals

slickdeals homepage

Slickdeals is a community-driven site. Although the site’s homepage looks like any other online shop, all the deals you see have been submitted by members. To ensure quality, the rest of the community votes on the deals. Slickdeals also employs editors who curate specific lists of deals.

Furthermore, to safeguard your security when shopping, Slickdeals will only show offers from sellers who have received positive feedback from previous buyers.

The site’s electronics products cover everything from video games and TVs to cameras and smartphones. Like TechBargains, there are also small sections dedicated to non-tech items such as clothes and cars. You’ll see deals from several well-known retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Skyscanner, and Newegg.

3. Newegg

newegg homepage

Newegg has been in business for almost two decades. In that time, it has grown to become one of the web’s top online shopping sites for saving money. Its original focus was on computer hardware, but the site soon expanded into software and other electronics. Today, you can also buy power tools, sports equipment, and fashion items.

Despite Newegg’s expansion, it remains one of the best places to find cheap networking devices, computer components, and tech solutions for an office or workspace. Much like Amazon, Newegg sells products directly but also allows third-party sellers to distribute their wares via the marketplace.

Newegg also offers a healthy dose of refurbished, opened, and discontinued items. They are available at even more significant discounts.

4. Micro Center

micro center router example

Micro Center is the first cheap electronics website on the list stuck to its real purpose—it only offers electronic items, nothing else. Of course, it also has physical stores around the United States.

There are several broad categories on the site, including Laptops, Desktops, Processors, Networking, SSDs, and Computer Cases. Each is packed with deals.

Like Newegg, you can also use Micro Center to pick up great deals on refurbished devices and open-box products. Almost every item on the site has a discount.

Overnight shipping is available in the contiguous United States. Micro Center does not ship internationally.

5. Swappa

swappa homepage

Have you considered second-tech? If you’re working on a tight budget, you can find big-ticket items like TVs, gaming consoles, and high-end smartphones for a lot less money if you’re prepared to accept used devices.

Swappa is home to some of the best second-hand deals. Like Micro Center, the site is exclusively focused on tech.

You buy and sell directly with other users, cutting out the middleman. To ensure broken items aren’t sold, Swappa has a robust listing approval process in place.

Some of the deals on Swappa are unrivaled by the other sites on this list. You can pick up an iPhone 11 for around $450 and a Nintendo Switch for $220. Even used computer parts are very cheap.

6. Bang Good

bang good homepage

Bang Good is a Chinese site that ships to the United States. It offers wholesale prices for single-item purchases. Bang Good isn’t a place where you’re going to find branded products (though you will sometimes see deals on well-known Chinese brands like Xiaomi).

The site is, however, a place to buy cheap earphones, speakers, phone accessories, 3D printer parts, security systems, and smart robots where the brand is arguably less important.

Bang Good’s big drawback is the shipping time. You can expect it to take at least one month between hitting the order button and seeing a parcel on your doorstep.

Other popular Chinese sites for cheap electronics include AliExpress, GearBest, and NewFrog. AliExpress is a legit site, as long as you take standard precautions to avoid scams, as you would with any other online retailer.

7. Fry’s

frys homepage deals

Fry’s is a chain of electronics stores in the US. It does not have the nationwide presence of a chain such as Best Buy, however, the company is worth checking out. It offers one of the best electronics online shopping sites; you’re much more likely to find a bargain than at Best Buy or one of its many competitors.

Even though Fry’s does not have stores across the country, it still ships anywhere in the US. That means you can still take advantage of the cheap electronics, even if you live hours from the nearest outlet.

Many of the listings of the store include free shipping.

8. B&H

b and h deals

Although B&H does have a storefront in New York, these days it has morphed into a primarily online retailer.

B&H’s strong suit is audio and video gear. It’s what the physical store originally sold when it opened its doors back in 1973. Today, it also sells computers and other home tech equipment.

The site also has a “Used” section. You can find everything from second-hand camera lenses to darkroom apparatus.

Make Sure You Get the Best Deals Online

Knowing which online shopping sites offer cheap electronics is only one of the ways you can save money when buying things on the internet. And on sites like Wish, where electronic deals seem too good to be true—they probably are.

Also, keep in mind these international shopping sites that offer free shipping when you are looking for stuff not available in your own country and these awesome online shops with free two-day shipping.

Clean Up Bad iPhone Photos With These 4 Decluttering Apps

clean-up-iphone-photos

If you’re snap-happy, organizing your iPhone’s camera roll can become tedious. Two tasks are especially so: comparing similar photos to select the best of the bunch, and weeding out bad photos.

Why not let a smart app make these chores quick and easy for you? Pick an iPhone photo decluttering app from the list below.

Before We Begin…

You should note a few important points before proceeding:

  1. Keep in mind that deleted photos end up in the Recently Deleted folder of the Photos app. Until you empty this folder, you won’t reclaim the space created by trashing the photos from your phone.
  2. To manually get rid of the deleted photos for good, first open the Recently Deleted folder in the Photos app. Next, tap Select at the top-right and then Delete All at the-bottom left. Your phone will automatically clear photos from this folder after they sit in it for 30 days.
    1. Note that this folder lets you recover deleted photos on your iPhone, so make sure you want to erase them permanently before doing so.
  3. It’s best to manually go through the photos and other media that an app has lined up for bulk deletion. This will ensure that you don’t lose any valuable files accidentally.
  4. You’ll need to be extra careful while deleting photos from your iCloud Photo Library. Otherwise, you might end up losing important ones from all your Apple devices and iCloud as well.

Now let’s take a look at the apps we have chosen for this task.

1. Remove Master for Camera Roll

This app lets you trash photos, Tinder-style. Once you’ve installed it, you can sift through your photos one by one, swiping left to delete a photo and swiping right to keep it. After every swipe, the next photo comes up for review automatically.

Don’t worry if you delete any photos accidentally. You can rescue them from the Trash folder. To do this, first visit the appropriate section by tapping on the trash icon at the top-left. Next, deselect the photos you want to recover and exit the Trash folder by tapping the X button at the top-left. You’ll then see a prompt to cancel the delete action. Tap Yes to proceed.

Remember, any photos you leave selected will be erased. If any of them happens to be the master image of their set, you can still recover that photo from the Recently Deleted folder of the Photos app.

If you want to remove ads, select photos by month, or mark photos as favorites, you’ll need to pay for the premium version of the app.

Remove Master is not the only app that takes a swipe-based approach to photo deletion. PhotoTrash ($1) and Cleen Photos (Free) are a couple of alternatives you can explore.

Love the whole swipe-left/swipe-right approach to apps? Try the Tinder experience for email, jobs, food, and more.

2. Remo

Remo is a great way to delete duplicate photos from your iPhone.

After scanning your photo library, Remo lines up all exact duplicates in one tab and all similar photos in another tab. In both tabs, you can mark an entire set of duplicates/similar images for deletion in one go.

Don’t worry that you might end up dumping all photos in a set unintentionally. Remo will stop you from doing that with an error message. The app allows you select/deselect photos individually and also preview them before deletion.

In the case of similar images, you might want to optimize the threshold for how closely Remo matches such photos. To do this, head to the app’s settings.

If you want a free, simple app to remove duplicates and similar pictures in bulk, install Remo. It’s just a pity that it’s not as accurate as Gemini Photos, the next app on our list.

Download: Remo (Free)

3. Gemini Photos

Wondering if Gemini Photos has anything to do with the duplicate file finder Mac app Gemini? Yes, it does. MacPaw, the developer of Gemini, decided to clean up your iPhone’s camera roll as well with Gemini Photos.

The iPhone app automatically selects the bad photos cluttering up your phone and serves them up for review. You’ll see everything from blurry photos and duplicates to screenshots and photos with text. Whether you want to follow the app’s recommendation and trash these photos in bulk or keep any of them is up to you.

You’ll also find sets of similar photos and a “keep” recommendation by the app for the best photo in a set. However, this feature is available only with a free trial for the first three days after you install the app. After that, you’ll need a paid subscription for it.

What about the photos that don’t fall under any of Gemini’s preset categories? You can declutter them one by one from the Other folder. All you need to do is swipe down to delete a photo or swipe up to retain it.

Want to leave certain photos out of future scans? No problem. You can add them to the app’s Ignore List. With Gemini Photos, you can also delete your whole photo library in one shot.

Download: Gemini Photos (Free, subscription available)

4. Bulk Delete

bulk delete app

Bulk Delete allows you to select photos with a swipe and delete them in bulk. But that’s no big deal, since the Photos app lets you do the same.

Unlike Photos, though, Bulk Delete:

  • Makes it easier to distinguish between selected and unselected photos
  • Lets you delete your entire photo library if you wish to start from scratch

The real benefit of the app is time-based deletion. With this feature, you can choose to delete all photos taken in the last hour, or in the last 30 days, for example.

Download: Bulk Delete ($0.99)

Banish the Clutter From Your iPhone Photos

You stand to gain quite a bit of free space on your phone once you’re done deleting all the chaff from your camera roll.

Sure, you can always use the built-in iPhone features to manage your photos. But with the help of the apps above, you might even enjoy the process.

How to Send Automatic Replies to Text Messages on Android

If you’re usually quick to respond to text messages, people might worry if you don’t reply for a while. Thankfully, it’s easy to set up automatic text replies on Android.

Using a few apps, you can send auto-responses to people who try to contact you while you’re driving, in a meeting, or otherwise occupied. Here’s how to auto-reply to texts on Android.

Automatically Respond While Driving With Android Auto

If you’re primarily interested in automatic responses while driving, Android Auto lets you respond to texts with one tap. This applies whether your car has an Android Auto-compatible unit or you use the Android Auto app on your phone.

To set up automated text responses in Android Auto, first open the app. Slide out the left sidebar and choose Settings. Under the Notifications section, tap Auto reply. Here, you can customize the text that appears when you auto-respond to a message.

Make sure you have the Show message notifications and/or Show group message notifications toggles enabled, too. Otherwise, you won’t know when a message comes in and can’t auto-respond.

Now, when you see a notification come in for a message, you can hit the auto-response field to send your automated message with one quick tap. Plus, this works for all Android Auto-supported messaging apps (such as WhatsApp and Telegram), not just SMS. While it’s not fully automated, it’s a safer way to respond on the road when needed.

Be sure to check out the best Android Auto apps to get more use out of the service.

Use the SMS Auto Reply App

The above is great for driving, but there’s much more you can do to auto-reply to texts on Android. One of the best apps for the job is SMS Auto Reply Text Message, which offers most of its features for free.

Download: SMS Auto Reply Text Message (Free, in-app purchases available)

Getting Started With SMS Auto Reply

After installing the app, you can walk through the basic overview and start making your own auto-response rules. Tap Add/Edit on the home screen to start one.

At the top, you’ll see the Busy template is selected by default. You can tap this to change it to others like Driving, Meeting, or Movie. Each one has its own preset message, which you can edit in the Message field.

If you want to create a new response template, tap the Plus icon at the top-right and give it a name. Before moving on, make sure you have SMS selected under Select channel to reply to so the responder works on text messages.

Messages for Specific Contacts

Next, you can optionally choose to send a personalized message to particular contacts. This allows you to leave a more personal note for people you know well or are expecting a message from, for example.

Tap the Pencil icon next to Personalized List to select contacts or contact groups that the specific message should go to. Once you choose the contacts, type out the message for them.

You’ll also see a Don’t Reply List field. This allows you to specify numbers that you don’t want to auto-respond to. For instance, you can exclude automated numbers like bank alerts.

When you’re done, tap Save to keep your changes to the current template.

Setting a Time Period for Responses

Next, you’ll want to set up a time for the auto-responder to run. Choose Set Time on the editing or home page to configure this.

Use the From and To fields at the top of the screen to set when the service should be active. From there, you have three options for how responses work:

  • Choose Run by Time to activate the responder during the chosen times every day.
  • Run by Date will respond to messages in the time period you’ve selected, during a period of dates that you choose.
  • Select Run by Week Days to use the responder for the time period you’ve selected only on certain days of the week. Check the Repeat Weekly box if you want it to run the same way in the coming weeks.

Tap Save and you’ll go to the On/Off screen. Here, the app will let you know that due to Android limitations, it only works with SMS text messages. This means it’s not compatible with missed calls and MMS as it once was.

Toggling Auto-Responses

On the Turn ON/OFF page, you’ll see all the auto-response rules you’ve created. If you’d like to create different profiles for different times or groups of people, you can repeat the above steps to set up as many rules as you like.

To finally enable auto-responses, enable the slider next to a rule. When you do this, the app will prompt you to enable notification access so it knows when you get a text message. It also asks you to disable battery optimization and allow unrestricted data access so it can run properly.

This is a lot of permissions to grant, but is necessary for the app to function as intended.

When a rule is currently running, you’ll see it highlighted in blue on this page.

Auto Responder Settings and Other Features

That’s all you need to get started with SMS Auto Reply. The service has a few extras that you should know about, however.

Once a rule has come into effect, tap Reports on the home screen to view information about what messages it sent while that profile was active. On the left sidebar, you can use the Backup tool to save your configurations to Google Drive.

Also on this sidebar, you’ll find a Settings menu that’s worth examining. For instance, enable Send only one reply and the app won’t respond to multiple messages from the same person in a time period. Under Reply rules, you can also choose to respond only to your contacts, non-contacts, or personalized lists.

You can also choose to ignore short numbers, which is a good idea since most automated messages come from short code numbers.

Auto Reply offers a few in-app purchases to unlock more features. These include auto-responding to messages from Facebook and WhatsApp, setting an alarm when rules end, and adding a default state. It costs $4.49 for everything (including ad removal), which is worthwhile if you use the service often.

More Auto-Response Options With IFTTT

If you don’t like the above solution for some reason, you can always create your own auto-responses with IFTTT.

First, sign up for IFTTT and activate the Android SMS service by installing the app on your Android phone. From there, you can use Android text messages as both triggers and actions for new applets.

IFTTT Android SMS

You’re only limited by your creativity here. For example, you might use the New SMS received matches search trigger to catch messages containing certain words. The action could then send an SMS in response letting them know that you’re not available.

There’s a lot to digest with IFTTT, so check out our complete IFTTT guide to help you on your way.

Auto-Replying to Text Messages Made Easy

We’ve looked at a few ways to send auto-response texts on Android. Whether you just want an easy way to let people know you’re driving or wish to dive into a full setup with multiple profiles, you won’t have to leave anyone waiting for a response again.

To get even more out of texts, check out how to schedule SMS on Android and the best services that put SMS to good use.

20 Secret Netflix Codes to Help You Find New Content

netflix-secret-codes

If you subscribe to Netflix, you need to know about the service’s “secret codes.” These are numerical tags used to browse specific genres inaccessible from the main menus.

Secret Netflix codes make Netflix a lot more usable; given the amount of content available, it’s difficult to find stuff you really like without them.

And the downside? Well, there are hundreds of individual codes, so how can you possibly get through them all?

Fear not, as we have done the hard work for you. And here’s our list of the secret Netflix codes guaranteed to help you find new content.

How to Use the Netflix Category Codes

To use Netflix codes to find movies and TV shows, enter the following URL into your browser, replacing [CODE] with the correct number from your genre of choice:

Now that you know how, here are the best Netflix codes to find new content…

1. B-Horror—8195

netflix b horror genre

The term “B-Movie” is derived from Hollywood’s Golden Age, a period when cinemas would typically show a low budget film alongside a much-anticipated blockbuster in a double feature showing. As film production costs rose the double feature phenomenon began to fade, but the concept of B-movies lived on.

Many B-Horror movies have slowly become cult classics. They are formulaic, have diabolical acting, shocking scripts, and often include an incredibly cheesy monster or ghoul—but we love them!

If horror is your favorite movie genre, read our list of the best horror films to watch on Netflix before you pick what to watch next.

2. Tearjerkers—6384

Tearjerkers try to make you cry or be sad. They are normally excessively sentimental, and you’ll walk away feeling emotionally drained. The feelings they generate can stay with you for weeks, if not longer.

If this is your thing, Netflix has a great selection to choose from. Just make sure you bring your tissues.

3. Art House—29764

The most famous Hollywood filmmakers are unwilling to take risks on pieces that are liable to return financial losses, so Art House movies are normally produced outside of the big studios.

They are frequently experimental in nature and the end product closely adheres to the director’s artistic ideals, often without compromise.

4. Biographical Documentaries—3652

netflix bio doc genre

Biographical documentaries can amaze, inspire, and shock. Some of the world’s most famous and interesting people have had movies made about them.

You need to look no further than the 2015 Academy Awards for an insight into their popularity—The Theory of Everything (about the life of Stephen Hawking) picked up five Oscar nominations, including “Best Picture”. It’s definitely one of the Netflix codes worth checking out.

5. Dramas based on Books—4961

An incredible number of films are actually adaptations of books—many of which you might not even realize were books in the first place.

Lots of people prefer reading books or listening to audiobooks on Audible over watching films. However, if you’re looking to digest some popular titles in hours rather than weeks, this is the way forward.

6. Social Issue Dramas—3947

Films have the almost unique gift of being able to bring social strife, injustice, and conflict into the consciousness of the public at large.

This genre has also seen a boom in recent years, with films based on slavery, women’s rights, and class wars all making ripples in Hollywood.

7. Period Pieces—12123

netflix period drama

Period pieces have a wide scope. Mention the term in passing, and most people’s minds will drift to TV shows like Downton Abbey and films like Pride and Prejudice, but in reality everything from Titanic to Gladiator is included.

In recent years, period pieces have become one of the most popular Netflix genres among viewers.

We’ve written about the best period dramas on Netflix if you would like to learn more.

8. Dark Comedies—869

Dark comedy can be described as laughing about something while simultaneously feeling bad about it. It typically takes a serious subject and makes light of it, either with morbid satire or with a feeling of Greek tragedy. The film most often used to typify the genre is Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 classic Dr Strangelove.

9. Asian Action Movies—77232

Are you fed up of watching the same tired old plotlines and aging actors in Hollywood’s action movies?

Then why not head to the other side of the world? New actors, new ideas, new locations, and new special effects add some life back into one of Hollywood’s most popular modern genres.

10. Slapstick Comedies—10256

netflix slapstick genre

Slapstick comedy has its roots in silent films, when physical humor such as falling, tripping, and crashing was highlighted and prioritized over character development and dialog.

Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and the Keystone Cops were some of the earliest protagonists, but the genre lives on to this day.

11. Experimental Movies—11079

What about Netflix movie codes for true film geeks? You could try the Experimental Movies genre.

Also known as avant-garde movies, they formed the backbone of a genre that started to come into its own in the post-war period. The films pushed the boundaries of convention, using new technologies and new subject matter to break away from the conventional wisdom of the era.

12. Quirky Romance—36103

“Quirky” is a hard word to pin down. It could be a love story with a twist, a creative adaptation of an old classic, or simply a wacky character who seems out of place in a romantic movie.

If this is your cup of tea, Netflix has a long list of options to choose from.

13. Dramas Based on Real Life—3653

big short netflix movie

Real-life is arguably a director’s greatest resource. The stories we hear about on a day-to-day basis are often way beyond even the most fertile of imaginations.

Whether your primary interest is sports, politics, or history, there is something in this category to suit every taste.

14. Emotional Movies—4136

Emotional movies are closely tied to the aforementioned tearjerkers, except they don’t have to end in sadness. Their objective is to make feelings well up inside you, whether that’s rage, anger, happiness, pity, or anything else.

This is one of the largest sub-sections on Netflix, with hundreds of films listed.

15. Romantic Favorites—502675

From modern romantic comedies to the classic love stories of yesteryear, everyone has a favorite romantic movie, even if they won’t admit it.

Spend a night on the sofa with your significant other and get lost in a world kisses, love, and happiness!

16. Imaginative Fantasy—2384

netflix fantasy genre

Imaginative fantasy covers a huge amount of ground. Topics such as magic, supernatural happenings, mythology, folklore, and fantasy worlds are all fair game.

Some of the most popular titles in the genre include Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter Series, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

17. Mind-Bending Movies—1089

Thought-provoking and psychological, this genre will keep you on the edge of your seat as you wonder where the next twist is coming from.

It’s a genre that can keep you thinking long after the film finishes, sometimes even having a profound effect on how you lead your life.

18. Mockumentaries—26

Mockumentaries are normally parodies, with fictional events being portrayed as a documentary recording of real-life.

The genre first began to gain steam in the early 1980s, but there were some examples of the genre as early as the 1930s.

19. Showbiz Comedies—3706

netflix lalaland movie

Showbiz comedies are a self-deprecating look in the mirror by the people who make movies. Old classics like Sullivan’s Travels and Singing in the Rain got the ball rolling, and their popularity has persisted into the modern era.

20. War Movies—3373

War movies are one of the most popular genres in cinema. The harrowing tales from the frontlines resound with us in a way that no other genre can match.

Whether it’s a battle between ancient civilizations or an up-close look at the trenches of World War I, the visuals and the sounds give you the sense of being right there amongst the action.

AirDrop Not Working? Fix It Fast With These Tips

airdrop-not-working

AirDrop is supposed to make it easy to transfer data from one Apple device to another. It does so using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to create an encrypted communications channel. But unfortunately, AirDrop is far from perfect and doesn’t always work the way it’s meant to.

If you’ve ever questioned why AirDrop isn’t working on your iPhone or Mac, we have help for you. Below, you’ll find everything you can do to fix AirDrop.

AirDrop Requirements for Apple Devices

First, you need to check that your device is actually compatible with AirDrop. Sometimes Apple’s requirements change, but at the time of writing, you can use AirDrop with:

  • Any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 7 or later
  • Any Mac introduced after 2011 (excluding the 2012 Mac Pro) running OS X Yosemite or later

If your device is compatible, make sure you know how to use AirDrop properly.

Apple used to allow Mac-to-Mac AirDrop transfers between older machines as well. If your Mac is running macOS High Sierra or earlier, you may still be able to AirDrop with the following Macs:

  • MacBook or MacBook Pro (from late 2008 onwards)
  • Mac Pro or iMac (from early 2009 onwards, with an AirPort Extreme)
  • Mac Mini (from 2010 onwards)
  • MacBook Air (from late 2010 onwards)

If you can’t find one of these older Macs using AirDrop, click on Don’t see who you’re looking for? and select Search for an Older Mac. Apple removed this option in macOS Catalina.

Search for an Older Mac popup window in AirDrop for Mac

Troubleshooting Tips for When AirDrop Isn’t Working

There are lots of problems you might encounter when AirDrop isn’t working. You might find that your devices aren’t showing up in the AirDrop sharing window, you can’t send files to devices that do appear, or you can’t find certain files after someone else sent them to you.

We can’t tell you exactly why AirDrop isn’t working on your Mac or iPhone. But we can show you how to fix any AirDrop problem with the troubleshooting tips below.

1. Update the Operating System

Apple frequently releases new updates to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS that are designed to fix software bugs. If AirDrop isn’t working, install the latest updates for your devices as they may fix it.

On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update. On a Mac, open the Apple menu and go to System Preferences > Software Update.

Checking for iOS Software Updates in iPhone Settings

2. Restart Both Devices

This is a classic troubleshooting tip because it’s so effective. Restarting your iPhone, iPad, or Mac might be all you need to get AirDrop working again. And it only takes a moment to try it.

3. Turn Off AirDrop Restrictions

If AirDrop isn’t showing up on your iOS device at all, you might have blocked it in your Content & Privacy Restrictions, which you’ll find under Settings > Screen Time. Take a look at the Allowed Apps section and make sure AirDrop is turned on.

You may need to enter a Screen Time passcode to make changes.

4. Disable Personal Hotspot on Your iPhone

Both AirDrop and Personal Hotspot utilize your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, so you can’t use them at the same time. Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot on your iOS device to turn off that feature, then try using AirDrop again.

5. Turn Off Do Not Disturb Mode

Your device might not receive transfer requests from AirDrop because Do Not Disturb is turned on.

Open Control Center and tap the moon icon to turn it off on your iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, click the Notification Center icon in the top-right of the menu bar and scroll down to reveal a Do Not Disturb toggle.

Do Not Disturb option in Mac Notification Center

6. Restart Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on Both Devices

A particularly useful solution if AirDrop is not working is to disable and re-enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Using your iPhone or iPad, open Control Center again and tap the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons to turn them off and on.

On a Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and select Turn Wi-Fi off to turn it off, then enable it again. Go to System Preferences > Bluetooth to restart Bluetooth.

7. Change Your AirDrop Visibility Settings

AirDrop gives you three visibility options: Everyone, Contacts Only, or Receiving Off. If your device isn’t showing up in AirDrop, try switching to each of these options to fix it. Just be careful of NSFW AirDrop attempts if you leave it on Everyone.

On a Mac, open Finder and select AirDrop from the sidebar. Open the dropdown menu where it says Allow me to be discovered by to choose a different option.

On an iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, then tap and hold in the top-left section to reveal an AirDrop button. Use this to choose different options.

8. Prepare Both Devices to Receive an AirDrop Request

Sometimes it helps to prepare your device for incoming AirDrop transfers, making it more likely to show up on someone else’s device. Unlock your iPhone or iPad and leave it on the Home screen to prepare it. For a Mac, open a new Finder window and select AirDrop from the sidebar.

9. Use AirDrop From a Third Apple Device

This isn’t an option for everyone, but if you have a spare Apple device, you should try using that to connect over AirDrop. Usually, if your iPhone or Mac shows up on this new device, it suddenly appears on the original device as well.

10. Send a Single File Instead of Multiple

AirDrop lets you share many different kinds of files at the same time. But if AirDrop isn’t working on your iPhone or Mac, you might want to simplify matters by sending a single file at a time instead.

AirDrop files automatically open in a relevant app. For instance, images open in the Photos app. But multiple file types don’t always open in the same app, which might explain why the AirDrop transfer failed.

11. Check the Downloads Folder for Missing Files

If AirDrop sent a file to your device but you can’t find it, take a look in the Downloads folder. On an iPhone, open the Files app and look for a Downloads folder in iCloud Drive. On a Mac, you can usually find the Downloads folder next to the Trash in the Dock.

12. Turn Off Your VPN for AirDrop to Work

Some users found that AirDrop didn’t work until they turned off the VPN on their iPhone or Mac. You might need to do this in the VPN app or in your device settings.

On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > VPN to do this. And on a Mac, go to System Preferences > Network and select your VPN from the sidebar.

13. Open Your Mac’s Firewall to More Connections

The firewall on your Mac might be set to block all incoming connections, which often includes new AirDrop transfers. You’ll need to loosen these restrictions from System Preferences if AirDrop still isn’t working.

Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall. Click the padlock and enter your administrator password to unlock changes. Then open the Firewall Options window and uncheck the option to Block all incoming connections.

14. Sign Into Your Apple ID Account Again

On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out. Choose the data to keep on your device, then confirm you want to Sign Out. After signing out, return to Settings to sign in to your Apple ID again.

On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Apple ID > Overview to sign out. Once again, choose the data to keep on your device and confirm you want to Sign Out. Once the sign out is complete, sign in from the same page and try using AirDrop again.

15. Reset the Network Settings on Your iPhone

You can reset the network settings on an iPhone or iPad to fix all kinds of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth problems, including problems with AirDrop not working. When you reset these settings, your device forgets any Wi-Fi passwords you’ve saved, so you’ll have to reconnect to trusted networks again.

If you still want to go ahead with it, go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings. Hopefully, AirDrop starts working again after the reset.

If AirDrop Still Isn’t Working

Until Apple makes AirDrop more reliable, you might have better luck using an alternative transfer method instead. Ironically, one of the best AirDrop alternatives is Apple’s own iCloud Drive. Simply upload files to iCloud from one device, then you can download them from another.

Managing files with iCloud Drive isn’t as quick as using AirDrop, because you need to upload and download files instead of transferring them directly. But when AirDrop isn’t working, iCloud Drive is the next best option.
