1. Facebook civil rights audit says white supremacy policy is ‘too narrow’

Over the last six months, Facebook has made changes around enforcing rules against hate speech, fighting discrimination in ads and protecting against misinformation and suppression, according to a new progress report on an audit led by former ACLU Washington Director Laura Murphy.

However, the report says Facebook’s policy is still “too narrow.” That’s because it solely prohibits explicit praise, support or representation of the terms “white nationalism” or “white separatism,” but does not technically prohibit references to those terms and ideologies.

Higher Ground Labs is betting tech can help sway the 2020 elections for Democrats

When Shomik Dutta and Betsy Hoover first met in 2007, he was coordinating fundraising and get-out-the-vote efforts for Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign and she was a deputy field director for the campaign.

Over the next two election cycles the two would become parts of an organizing and fundraising team that transformed the business of politics through its use of technology — supposedly laying the groundwork for years of Democratic dominance in organizing, fundraising, polling and grassroots advocacy.

Then came Donald J. Trump and the 2016 election.

For both Dutta and Hoover the 2016 outcome was a wake up call against complacency. What had worked for the Democratic party in 2008 and 2012 wasn’t going to be effective in future election cycles, so they created the investment firm Higher Ground Labs to provide financing and a launching pad for new companies serving Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations.

As the political world shifts from analog to digital, we need a lot more tools to capture that spend,” says Dutta. “Democrats are spending on average 70 cents of every dollar raised on television ads. We are addicted to old ways of campaigning. If we want to activate and engage an enduring majority of voters we have to go where they are (and that’s increasingly online) and we have to adapt to be able to have these conversations wherever they are.”

Social media and the rise of “direct to consumer” politics

While the Obama campaign effectively used the Internet as a mobilization tool in its two campaigns, the lessons of social media and mobile technologies that offer a “direct-to-consumer” politics circumventing traditional norms have, in the ensuing years, been harnessed most effectively by conservative organizations, according to some scholars and activists.

“The internet is a tool and in that sense it’s neutral, but just like other communication tools from the past, people with more power, with more resources, with more organization, have been able to take advantage of it,” Jen Schradie, an Assistant Professor at the Observatoire sociologique du changement at Sciences Po in Paris, told Vox in an interview earlier this month.

Schradie is a scholar whose recent book, “The Revolution That Wasn’t contends that the Internet’s early applications as a progressive organizing tool has been overtaken by more conservative elements. “The idea of neutrality seems more true of the internet because the costs of distributing information are dramatically lower than with something like television or radio or other communication tools,” she said. “However, to make full use of the internet, you still need substantial resources and time and motivation. The people who can afford to do this, who can fund the right digital strategy, create a major imbalance in their favor.”

Schradie contends that a web of privately funded think tanks, media organizations, talk radio, and — increasingly — mobile applications have woven a conservative stitch into the fabric of social media. The medium’s own tendency to promote polarizing and fringe viewpoints also served to amplify the views of pundits who were previously believed to be political outliers.

Essentially, these sites have enabled commentators and personalities to create a patchwork of “grassroots” organizations and media operations dedicated to reaching an audience receptive to their particular political message that’s funded by billionaire donors and apolitical corporate ad dollars.

Then there’s the technology companies, like Cambridge Analytica, which improperly used access to Facebook data for targeting purposes — also financed by these same billionaires.

“The last six years have witnessed millions and millions of dollars of private Koch money and Mercer money that have gone to pretty sophisticated data and media efforts to advance the Republican agenda,” says Dutta. “I want to even the scale.”

Dutta is referring to Charles and David Koch and Robert Mercer, the scions and founder (respectively) of two family dynasties worth billions. The Koch brothers support a web of political advocacy groups while Mercer and his daughter were large backers of Breitbart News and Cambridge Analytica, two organizations which arguably provided much of the policy underpinnings and online political machinery for the Trump presidential campaign.

But there’s also the simple fact that Donald Trump’s digital strategy director, Brad Parscale, was able to effectively and inexpensively leverage the social media tools and data troves amassed by the Republican National Committee that were already available to the candidate who won the Republican primary. In fact, in the wake of Romney’s loss, Republicans spent years building up profiles of 200 million Americans for targeted messaging in the 2016 election.

“Who controls Facebook controls the 2016 election,” Parscale said during a speaking engagement at the Romanian Academy of Sciences, according to a report in Forbes.

Parscale, now the campaign manager for the President’s 2020 reelection campaign recalled, “These guys from Facebook walked to my office and said: ‘we have a beta … it’s a new onboarding tool … you can onboard audiences straight into Facebook and we will match them to their Facebook accounts,’” according to Forbes.

During the 2016 campaign Hillary Clinton’s team made 66,000 visual ads, according to Parscale, while the Trump campaign made 5.9 million ads by leveraging social media networks and the language of memes. And in the run-up to the 2020 election, Parscale intends to go back to the same well. The Trump campaign has already spent over $5 million on Facebook ads in the current election cycle, according to The New York Times outspending every single Democratic candidate in the field and roughly all of the Democrats combined.

Reaching Higher Ground

Dutta and Hoover are working to offset this movement with investments of their own. Back in 2017, the two launched Higher Ground Labs, an early stage company accelerator and investment firm dedicated to financing technology companies that could support progressive causes.

The firm has $15 million committed from investors including Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn and a partner at Greylock; Ron Conway, the founder of SV Angel and an early backer of Google, Facebook, and Twitter; Chris Sacca, an early investor in Uber; and Elizabeth Cutler, the founder of SoulCycle. Already, Higher Ground has invested in over thirty companies focused on services like advocacy outreach, polling, and campaign organizing — among others.

The latest cohort of companies to receive backing Higher Ground Labs

“It is vitally important that Democrats learn to do their campaigns online,” says Dutta. “The way you recruit volunteers; the way you poll sentiment; the way you target and mobilize voters has to be done with online tools and has to improve in the progressive movement and that’s the job of Higher Ground Labs to fix.”

For profit companies have a critical role to play in election organizing and mobilization, Dutta says. Thanks to government regulation, only private companies are allowed to trade data across organizations and causes (provided they do it at fair market value). That means advocacy groups, unions and others can tap the information these companies collect — for a fee.

The Democratic party already has one highly valued private company that it uses for its technology services. Formed from the merger of NGP Software and Voter Activation Network, two companies that got their start int he late 90s and early 2000s, NGP VAN is the largest software and technology services provider for Democratic campaigns. It’s also a highly valued company, which received roughly $100 million in financing last year from the private equity firm Insight Venture Partners, according to people familiar with the investment. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Our vision has been to build a platform that would break down the painful data silos that exist in the campaigns and nonprofit space, and to offer truly best-in-class digital, fundraising and organizing features that could serve both the largest and the smallest nonprofits and campaigns, all with one unified CRM,” wrote Stu Trevelyan, the chief executive of NGP VAN + EveryAction, in an August blogpost announcing the investment. “We’re so excited that others, like our new partners at Insight, share that vision, and we can’t wait to continue innovating and growing together in the coming years.”

Can startups lead the way?

Even as private equity dollars boost the firepower of organizations like NGP VAN, venture capitalists are financing several companies from the Higher Ground Labs portfolio.

Civis Analytics, a startup founded by the former Chief Analytics Officer of Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign raised $22 million from outside investors and counts Higher Ground Labs among its backers. Qriously, another Higher Ground Labs portfolio company, was acquired by Brandwatch, as was GroundBase, a messaging platform acquired by the nonprofit progressive advocacy organization ACRONYM.

Other companies in the portfolio are also attracting serious attention from investors. Standouts like Civis Analytics and Hustle, which raised $30 million last May, show that investors are buying into the proposition that these companies can build lasting businesses serving Democratic and progressive political campaigns and corporate businesses that would also like to rally employees or personalize a marketing pitch to customers.

These are companies like Change Research, an earlier stage company that just launched from Higher Ground Labs accelerator last year. That company, founded by Mike Greenfield, a serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur who was the first data scientist working on the problem fraud detection at PayPal, and Pat Reilly, a communications professional who worked with state and local Democratic politicians, is slashing the cost of political polling.

“I wanted to do something for American Democracy to try and improve the state of things,” Greenfield said in an interview last year.

For Greenfield, that meant increasing access to polling information. He cited the test case of a Kansas special election in a district that Donald Trump had won by 27 points. Using his own proprietary polling data, Greenfield predicted that the Democratic challenger, James Thompson, would pose a significant threat to his Republican opponent, Mike Estes.

Estes went on to a 7% victory at the ballot, but Thompson’s campaign did not have access to polling data that could have helped inform his messaging and — potentially — sway the election, said Greenfield.

“Public opinion is used to ween out who can be most successful based on how much money they’re able to raise for a poll,” says Reilly. It’s another way that electoral politics is skewed in favor of the people with disposable income to spend what is a not-insignificant amount of money on campaigns.

Polls alone can cost between $20,000 to $30,000 — and Change Research has been able to cut that by 80% to 90%, according to the company’s founders.

“It’s safe to say that most of the world was stunned by the outcome [of the Presidential election] because most polls predicted the opposite.,” says Greenfield. “Being a good American and as a parent of a ten-year-old and a twelve-year-old, providing forward thinking candidates and causes with the kind of insight they needed to win up and down the ballot could not only be a good business, but really help us save our Democracy.”

Change Research isn’t just polling for politicians. Last year, the company conducted roughly 500 polls for political candidates and advocacy groups.

“The way that I’ve described Change Research to investors is that we want to simultaneously move the world in a better direction and having a positive impact while building a substantial business,” says Greenfield. “We’re only going to work with candidates and causes that we’re aligned with.”

Being exclusively focused on progressive causes isn’t the liability that many in the broader business community would think, says Dutta. Many Democratic organizations won’t work with companies that sell services to both sides of the aisle.

For Higher Ground Labs, a stipulation for receiving their money is a commitment not to work with any Republican candidate. Corporations are okay, but conservative causes and organizations are forbidden.

“We’re in a moment of existential crisis in America and this Republican party is deeply toxic to the health and future of our country,” says Dutta. “The only path out of this mess is to vote Republicans out of office and to do that we need to make it easier for good candidates to run for office and to engage a broader electorate into voting regularly.”

Spark Networks SE closes its $258M acquisition of dating brand Zoosk

Berlin-based Spark Networks, the owner of niche dating app brands like Christian Mingle, Jdate, LDSsingles, Silver Singles, Jswipe, and others, today announced it has acquired Match.com competitor Zoosk for a combination of cash and stock. The deal values Zoosk at approximately $258 million.

Spark says it will issue 12,980,000 American Depositary Shares (ADS) to former Zoosk shareholders valued at $153 million based on the closing price of Spark ADSs of $11.78 on June 28, 2019. The deal also provides for cash consideration of $105 million, subject to adjustment, which will be funded by a new $125 million senior secured credit facility, the company says in a release.

zoosk

Jeronimo Folgueira (right), CEO of Spark Networks, confirms the acquisition with Steven McArthur (left), outgoing CEO of Zoosk, Inc.

Plans for the deal were previously announced.

Following the closing of the merger, Spark has 2,601,037 ordinary shares issued and outstanding underlying 26,010,365 ADSs, with former Zoosk shareholders collectively owning 49.9% of the combined company.

The Zoosk app, available in over 80 countries, is a free download but charges users who want to send messages and chat with other subscribers, similar to Match.

Zoosk has for a long time struggled to compete against Match Group and its top-ranking dating apps in the U.S., led by Tinder. A few years ago, the company laid off a third of its staff and even had to call off its IPO, as Tinder decimated its business.

Today, it lists itself in the App Store’s “Social Networking” category instead of “Lifestyle,” where Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and others rank, in an effort to gain more visibility.

According to data from Sensor Tower, Zoosk has generated worldwide in-app revenue of $250 million and has seen 38 million downloads since January 2014. Half of those downloads (19M) are from the U.S., which also accounts for $165 million (66%) of the revenue.

In Q1 2019, Zoosk revenue was flat at $13 million, the firm also says. Tinder revenue, by comparison, grew 43%. And in Match Group’s latest earnings, it said its total quarterly revenue grew 14% year-over-year to $465 million.

Similarly, Spark Networks has also fought to gain footing as Match Group became an ever-larger force in the online dating market over the years. However, in the last year, the company saw its revenue grow 22%. But it still operates at a loss.

As a result of the deal, Spark says its global monthly paying subscribers will increase to over 1 million. It also says it expects to achieve over $50 million of Adjusted EBITDA in 2020.

“Today’s closing represents a remarkable milestone in Spark’s continued evolution. Four years ago, we were a small German startup with no presence in North America. Our efforts over the last few years have created an NYSE-listed business with over $300 million in total revenue that is also the second largest player in North America. We are extremely proud of the company we have built, and are also excited by the future potential of our new portfolio,” said Jeronimo Folgueira, CEO of Spark, in a statement.

Zoosk’s current CEO Steven McArthur is departing Zoosk following the deal, but will join Spark’s Board of Directors.

“I have been very impressed by Jeronimo and his team during this process and I am very confident in their ability to execute the integration plan we prepared together, and make the new combined company even more successful, driving substantial value creation for all shareholders over the next 12 to 18 months,” said McArthur.

Spark Networks SE was formed by the merger of Affinitas GmbH and Spark Networks Inc. in 2017. It’s listed on the NYSE under “LOV,” and is headquartered in Berlin, with offices in New York, Utah, and San Francisco.

Its full list of dating app brands tends to be more faith-focused or targets particular niches. These apps include EliteSingles, Jdate, Christian Mingle, eDarling, JSwipe, SilverSingles, Attractive World, eDarling, LDSsingles, Adventist Singles, Crosspaths, and Weekly Dating Insider, in addition to now Zoosk.

In terms of other exec changes, Spark CFO Rob O’Hare is relocating to Zoosk’s HQ in San Francisco to smooth the transition. Herbert Sablotny, Spark’s former Chief Strategy Officer, will also rejoin the company to assist in the Zoosk integration efforts, having previously done the same with the integrations of Attractive World and Spark Networks, Inc. Other key members of the Zoosk team are staying on as well, for the time being.

Piper Jaffray & Co. acted as the financial advisor to Zoosk on the proposed transaction and Fenwick & West LLP served as legal counsel to Zoosk. Piper Jaffray & Co. also arranged for staple financing for Zoosk. And Morrison & Foerster LLP served as legal counsel to Spark.

Match Group and Spark Networks SE aren’t the only dating app businesses that have taken a portfolio approach. Bumble’s owner in June said it was revamping its structure with the creation of Magic Lab, a holding company that includes its dating apps Bumble, Badoo, Chappy, and Lumen. It also plans to boost spending to $100 million to better compete with Match Group and soon, Facebook Dating.

We’ll talk even more Kubernetes at TC Sessions: Enterprise with Microsoft’s Brendan Burns and Google’s Tim Hockin

You can’t go to an enterprise conference these days without talking containers — and specifically the Kubernetes container management system. It’s no surprise then, that we’ll do the same at our inaugural TC Sessions: Enterprise event on September 5 in San Francisco. As we already announced last week, Kubernetes co-founder Craig McLuckie and Google’s director of product management for Kubernetes will join us to talk about the past, present and future of containers in the enterprise.

In addition, we can now announce that two other Kubernetes co-founders will join us: Google principal software engineer Tim Hockin, who currently works on Kubernetes and the Google Container Engine, and Microsoft distinguished engineer Brendan Burns, who was the lead engineer for Kubernetes during his time at Google.

With this, we’ll have three of the four Kubernetes co-founders on stage to talk about the five-year-old project.

Before joining the Kuberntes efforts, Hockin worked on internal Google projects like Borg and Omega, as well as the Linux kernel. On the Kubernetes project, he worked on core features and early design decisions involving networking, storage, node, multi-cluster, resource isolation and cluster sharing.

While his colleagues Craig McLuckie and Joe Beda decided to parley their work on Kubernetes into a startup, Heptio, which they then successfully sold to VMware for about $550 million, Burns took a different route and joined the Microsoft Azure team three years ago.

I can’t think of a better group of experts to talk about the role that Kubernetes is playing in reshaping how enterprise build software.

If you want a bit of a preview, here is my conversation with McLuckie, Hockin and Microsoft’s Gabe Monroy about the history of the Kubernetes project.

Early Bird tickets are now on sale for $249 and students can grab a ticket for just $75. Book your tickets here before prices go up.

How to Install Windows 7 on a VirtualBox Virtual Machine

windows-7-upgrade

Windows 7 is something of a relic. Not quite as ancient as Windows XP, of course. But Windows 7 is rapidly approaching its January 2020 end of support date. At that point, Microsoft will stop issuing public Windows 7 security patches. Companies that rely on Windows 7 will pay Microsoft to keep working on and fixing the operating system. But those fixes are unlikely to reach the public.

One option is to install Windows 7 in a VirtualBox virtual machine. Installing Windows 7 as a virtual machine gives you a security boost. Here’s how you do it.

What You Need to Install Windows 7 in VirtualBox

Before you get going, you need a few things in place.

The tutorial uses VirtualBox, a free virtual machine program. You need to download and install VirtualBox before continuing. Download and install VirtualBox version 5.2.xx using the link below. VirtualBox 5.2.xx can install and run both 32 and 64-bit image files.

Download: VirtualBox 5.2.xx for Windows | macOS | Solaris | Ubuntu (All Free)

There is a later version of VirtualBox, version 6.x. However, VirtualBox version 6.x can only install and run 64-bit image files. In that, the earlier 5.2.xx version is handy as it can handle both architectures and is still receiving updates.

You also need your Windows 7 disk image (ISO). If you don’t have your Windows 7 ISO, you can enter your Windows 7 product key here to secure an official download.

Once you install VirtualBox and have your Windows 7 ISO, you can continue.

Want to learn more about VirtualBox? Check out the MakeUseOf VirtualBox user’s guide for a ton of tips and tricks.

How to Install Windows 7 in VirtualBox

Now you can install Windows 7 in a virtual machine, using VirtualBox.

Open VirtualBox. Select New. Give your Windows 7 virtual machine a name.

windows 7 virtual machine choose size

Now, decide how much memory to allocate the virtual machine. How much you allocate depends on the host system as well as what you use Windows 7 for. For example, my desktop has 16GB RAM, so I can afford to allocate the virtual machine more memory so that it runs faster. In this case, I’m allocating 2048MB, which is 2GB.

In the bottom panel, select Create a virtual hard disk now, then Create.

Next, you configure the Windows 7 virtual machine disk size. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 16GB storage for Windows 7. Allocate as much as you want or need, but make sure it is more than 16GB. Keep the Hard disk file type as a VDI (you can move this virtual machine disk type to other virtual machine software), and let VirtualBox dynamically allocate the disk size (if you need more storage that you allocate, the disk can dynamically expand).

Hit Create.

Configure Your Windows 7 Virtual Machine

Before hitting Start, there are a few options that you must configure.

Right-click the virtual machine and select Settings.

Now, under the System tab, select Processor. You have the option of allocating your Windows 7 virtual machine more processing power, by way of assigning another processor core. If you have a multi-core system, assigning an extra core will give you a faster virtual machine experience. Depending on your system hardware, it could result in slower performance for the host machine.

windows 7 virtual machine processors

Next, under the Display tab, increase the Video Memory to 128MB.

On to the Storage tab. Here is where you insert your Windows 7 ISO. Under Storage Devices, select the Empty slot. Then, under Attributes, select the disk icon. Browse the location of your Windows 7 ISO. Press OK.

windows 7 virtual machine storage iso option

You’re now ready to boot your Windows 7 VirtualBox virtual machine for the first time.

Windows 7 Installation Guide

When the virtual machine boots, select your keyboard language and continue. Hit Install Now, then accept the licensing agreement.

windows 7 virtual machine install os

On the next page, select Custom, then select the virtual disk image drive created earlier. The Windows 7 installation process will start. Go and make a cup of tea, because this can take a moment. After the installation process completes, your Windows 7 virtual machine will restart automatically.

Windows 7 will restart a few times during the installation process. It is nothing to worry about. Do not touch a key when prompted or you will return to the Install Now option, rather than letting the installer do its thing.

Eventually, you will arrive at the Windows 7 Username set up, followed by the password creation page. Next up is to input your Windows 7 product key. If you already input your product key and downloaded Windows 7 direct from Microsoft, you might not encounter this page. If you do not have Windows 7 product key at the current time, you can skip this page, but your Windows 7 virtual machine will have limited functionality.

Use the Recommended security settings, choose your time-zone, and continue.

Install the VirtualBox Guest Additions ISO

The final setup is for the VirtualBox Guest Additions ISO. VirtualBox Guest Additions give your virtual machine better mouse pointer integration, the use of shared files between the host and the client, better video support, shared clipboards, and a host of other handy tools.

windows 7 virtual machine guest additions

Head to Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image. Inside the Windows 7 virtual machine, select Start Menu > Computer. Open the Guest Additions CD Image, then run VBoxWindowsAdditions. Install the Guest Additions, then Reboot.

Windows 7 End of Life Support Date

Microsoft is shutting off Windows 7 life support on 14 January 2020. At the time of writing, that is just over six months. Some companies, products, and services have no choice but to continue using Windows 7. But if you’re a home user who is clinging to Windows 7 because it is familiar, you should know the end is on the horizon.

Are you thinking of upgrading? Check out our guide on how to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 before January 2020!

Understand the Basic Terminology

monday.com works on three underlying elements: Boards, Groups, and Items. A board is a virtual whiteboard to store your projects. A group is a color-coded section containing your items (or tasks). They can be a week, month, specific step of a project, or whatever else you want. Each group can contain dozens of items.

Items are the basic building blocks of monday. Each item represents an individual row or line item a team member is working on. The content of that item depends on the board plan.

For example, in blogging, these represent the individual articles, a writer working on that article, publishing date, and more. The task should have a clear, actionable message summed up in one simple description.

The Best Dark Web Websites You Won’t Find on Google

dark-web-sites

You’ve heard of it before: the mysterious dark web. You’re probably equally curious and apprehensive about the whole thing.

Sign up to our Intro to The Deep & Dark Web email course!

This will sign you up to our newsletter

Enter your Email

But what is the dark web? And more importantly, what cool dark web sites are out there?

Here’s our list of the best dark web websites to visit. Make sure you leave your suggestions in the comments at the end.

Dark Web vs. Deep Web

Well, the deep web refers to anything on the internet that can’t be found using a search engine. That includes emails in your Gmail account, direct messages on social networks, and even your Facebook photos that you marked as private.

The dark web is a sub-section of the deep web. It is responsible for the deep web’s bad reputation. There are black markets selling drugs and other substances, grisly images, and even new identities for sale. Indeed, there are lots of reasons to avoid the dark web entirely.

Yet, at the same time, the dark web is well worth exploring. Amidst the chaos, you’ll find some great websites.

(Note: We’ve explained what is the dark web in more detail if you want to learn more.)

Use a VPN to Access the Dark Web

We strongly recommend shielding yourself with a VPN before you access the dark web. The notion that the Tor browser provides failsafe anonymity is false; you need to protect yourself.

Don’t know which VPN is best for you? There are plenty of options out there, both free and paid, but our 1# ranked VPN is ExpressVPN, which comes with Tor support and three free months.

1. The Hidden Wiki

hidden wiki home page

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/1iJRX3q

To visit a .onion site, you’ll have to both know it exists and know its URL. There are a few ways to find active .onion sites. One of them is using a directory of sites, like The Hidden Wiki.

Some of the sites are perfectly legit—such as domain services and email providers. Some—like whistleblowing—may face government censorship in your country. Others cross the divide into illegality. Make sure you’re smart about which dark web links you click on.

2. Facebook

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/1HN2fcd

You can access Facebook via the dark web by using the official Facebook .onion mirror.

Doing so has two primary benefits. Firstly, you can create and use an account anonymously. You can use Facebook’s services without exposing yourself to the company’s privacy-eroding tentacles.

Secondly, if Facebook is blocked in your location, you can use the dark web Facebook mirror to circumvent the censorship.

3. SoylentNews

soylent news home page

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/1OipYXM

It doesn’t matter where you sit on the political spectrum; almost everyone can agree that the mainstream media is barely fit for purpose.

One solution is to use an open source, community-driven news aggregator such as SoylentNews. Users can submit stories from around the world, and there’s also public discussion forums and an automatic comment moderation system.

4. ProPublica

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/2glmmfb

ProPublica was one of the first major news outlets to launch a dark web version of its site back in 2016.

ProPublica is a non-profit news organization that aims to “expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions, using the moral force of investigative journalism.”

One of its journalists, Hannah Dreier, won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for her coverage of gangs in Los Angeles. It was ProPublica’s fifth Pulitzer Prize.

5. DuckDuckGo

duckduckgo home page

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/1CWxanw

DuckDuckGo is one of the leading private internet search engines on the open web. It doesn’t track your browsing history, location, or any other data.

There’s also a dark web version of the search engine. It’s a great dark web search engine which it affords users an extra layer of protection and anonymity.

6. Galaxy3

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/323ge0v

If you don’t want to trust the dark web version of Facebook, you could try an entirely dark web-based social network.

One that’s worth checking out is Galaxy3. Obviously, you’re not going to find many of your real-life buddies on there, but you will find experts in computer code, people looking for adult meets, and plenty of other “interesting” characters.

7. Hidden Answers

hidden answers home page

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/2NlTWDU

Reddit has dominated the “forum-meets-news” space for more than a decade, but a string of controversies, an influx of new users, and ongoing censorship accusations have seen the site lose of charm in recent years.

Hidden Answers is akin to a dark web version of Reddit; we think it’s one of the best dark web sites. Users seek advice, post stories, and discuss a wide range of topics. Unlike Reddit, Hidden Answers offers users complete anonymity.

8. Mail2Tor

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/1sXDesW

Email is one of the least secure communication systems; the email providers have access to the contents of your inbox. For evidence, look no further the way Google automatically adds travel information, meetings, and other diary entries onto your calendar.

Mail2Tor is an alternative email provider. It lets anyone send and receive email anonymously via webmail or with an email client.

All messages are encrypted, and the company does not log your IP address.

9. OnionDomain

oniondomain home page

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/2NpZDRd

If you want to host your own .onion website, you will need a domain name. You can get a non-sensical domain for free, but if you want a vanity URL, you will need to pay.

Because of the way the network operates, you cannot purchase an onion domain from a regular registrar like GoDaddy. Instead, you will have to use a specialist service. OnionDomain is one such service.

10. TorLinks

Onion URL: https://ift.tt/325wLRu

TorLinks is an alternative site to The Hidden Wiki. It provides a list of dark web sites across endless categories.

Although there is some crossover, the list of sites on TorLinks is broadly different from those on The Hidden Wiki. Given the regularity with which .onions sites go offline and disappear, the more directory sites that you know about, the better.

Learn More About the Dark Web

The 10 dark web websites we’ve listed in this article will not be much use to you unless you know how to access and use the dark web.

To learn more, make sure you read our articles about the best dark web browsers and how to access the dark web safely and anonymously.

5 Bootable Windows PE-Based Recovery Discs That’ll Save Your System

windows-pe-recovery

Every Windows user should have access to at least one Windows system rescue disc. A Windows system rescue disc is a bootable recovery environment. The recovery environment usually has a bunch of handy tools you can use to fix Windows, or at least diagnose the issue.

Lots of Windows rescue discs use a Linux environment. But there are also recovery discs that use the Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE) instead. A Windows PE rescue disc has a familiar working environment, excellent hardware support, and the software you need to fix your system

What Is Windows PE?

Windows PE is a lightweight version of the Windows 10 operating system. You can use Windows PE to install, test, and repair a full installation of Windows 10. A Windows PE recovery disc will work with all Windows 10 versions: Home, Pro, Education, Enterprise, and so on.

The base Windows PE version supports all Windows applications, drivers, networking tools, disk partitioning and management, Computer Management tools, Hyper-V, and much more. The Windows PE-based recovery discs step this functionality up, adding in tons of free and open source tools you can use to recover, restore, and analyze your ailing Windows 10 installation.

Download: Windows Preinstallation Environment (Free)

1. Hiren’s BootCD PE

hirens boot cd windows pe

Hiren’s BootCD is a legendary Windows rescue disc. It is an all-in-one bootable rescue disc, packed with tools to help you recover from drive failures, malware, password recovery, account management, and much more.

The original Hiren’s BootCD was a Linux environment. But it stopped receiving updates in 2012. However, Hiren’s BootCD was revitalized as a Windows PE rescue disc in 2018. It features loads of open source and free recovery tools, all within a familiar Windows 10 environment. You can check out the full list of tools here.

2. Bob.Omb’s Modified Win10PEx64

Bob.Omb’s Modified Win10PEx64 rescue disc is a modified Windows Preinstallation Environment. It has a lengthy list of recovery and analysis tools, including Malwarebytes Antimalware, EaseUS Data Recovery, FileZilla, Rufus, and more.

Unlike some other Windows 10 PE rescue discs, Bob.Omb’s also includes several ransomware decryptors. The ransomware decryptors can scan your system for ransomware, remove it, and restore your encrypted files. However, they only work with specific ransomware types, so don’t attempt to use them on any old type of ransomware—you could make the infection worse or increase the ransom.

If you’re struggling with malware, check out the MakeUseOf complete malware removal guide.

3. Kyhi’s Recovery Drive

Kyhi’s Recovery Drive, also known with the cumbersome name of Windows 10 Recovery Tools—Bootable PE Rescue Disk, is a custom Windows 10 PE environment. In this case, TenForum’s user, Kyhi, has developed a Windows 10 PE environment filled with system restore and recovery tools.

Kyhi’s recovery drive has a substantial number of tools for malware removal, disk partitioning and repairing, administration tools, VNC tools, backup and recovery, and much more.

Developer, Kyhi, has stopped issuing pre-made recovery disc ISOs. But you can download the original 2017 release below.

4. Gandalf’s Windows 10PE x64

The official build name is “Gandalf’s Windows 10PE x64 Redstone 5 Build 17763 Version 04-30-2019.” Gandalf’s Windows 10PE recovery disc features hundreds of tools you can use to rescue your system in times of need.

As far as Windows PE-based recovery discs go, Gandalf’s certainly packs the most in, coming with around 200 tools.

Amongst those programs are disk recovery tools, network analysis apps, hardware and software diagnostic tools, backup programs, malware and firewall apps, and so much more. Gandalf’s recovery disc receives an update every few months, too, meaning most of the recovery apps and tools are running their latest versions.

5. Sergei Streclec’s WinPE

windows pe sergei streclec recovery

Sergei Streclec’s WinPE is Russian-developed Windows PE-based rescue disc. WinPE has a decent range of recovery tools, network analysis apps, backup utilities, archive tools, password managers, and more.

One nice touch in Sergei Streclec’s WinPE is the organization. All the tools are organized into handy categories, meaning you’ll find what you are looking for straight away.

Download: WinPE for Windows (Free)

Note: Please note the archive password is strelec. You need the password to unlock the recovery tools!

Create a Bootable Windows Recovery Disc

The recovery disc name is a slight misnomer. Originally, recovery discs were exactly that: bootable LiveCDs. Nowadays, you can boot most Windows recovery discs from a USB flash drive. You can boot all the Windows recovery discs on this list from a USB flash drive.

Check out the following list of ten bootable USB tools. My tool of choice is Rufus. Once you download the tool, follow the in-tool instructions to burn the ISO to your USB flash drive.

When you want to run your Windows PE-based recovery disc, shut down the computer, pop the USB flash drive in, and boot your system from the USB drive.

Here’s how you boot your system from a USB flash drive.

What Is the Best Windows PE-Based Recovery Disc?

As ever the best Windows rescue disc is the one that has the tool that fixes your problem. The Windows PE-based recovery discs here cover a similar range of recovery and analysis tools. If there is a specific tool you need, download the relevant recovery disc.

Most of the time, it is better to have a Windows PE-based recovery disc already copied to a USB flash drive. That way, when an issue does appear, you are ready to do battle. Remember, you don’t have to stick to one. Check out how to create a multiboot recovery disc USB for Windows and Linux.

2. Select the Sync Frequency

Next, you need to decide how frequently you want Calibre to check for new content. For some publications, you might be happy to download its long-form content once a week. Other sources—such as those which publish breaking news—might require a more frequent sync.

To schedule a news source for download and set how frequently Calibre checks for updated articles, highlight the source in the left-hand panel and click the checkmark next to Schedule for download on the Schedule tab in the right-hand panel.

Below the Schedule for download box, choose the sync frequency. You can set the days of the weeks, days of the month, or a custom timeframe.

Secondly, check out the options on the Advanced tab. You can give your news source a custom tag (to make it easier to find in the Calibre app), add the title of the publication as a tag, and choose a maximum number of issues to keep.

When you’re finally comfortable with your setup, hit the Save button. If you want to download content immediately, click on Download now instead.

4. Add Your Own News Sources

Despite the impressive list of news sources that are built into the Calibre app, it’s entirely possible that your preferred sites, newspapers, and magazines are not listed.

Thankfully, Calibre lets you add your own news sources as long as you can provide the URL of its RSS feed.

To add your personalized news sources to Calibre, return to the app’s homepage, click on the small arrow alongside Fetch news, and select Add or edit a custom news source.

At the bottom of the new window, click on New recipe. On the next page, you can give your new source a title, set the oldest article and the maximum number of items per feed, and add the URL that you want Calibre to scan.

When you’ve finished entering the information, click on Add feed, then Save.

To schedule the syncing with your new source, return to the main Fetch news screen. You will find the source in the Custom section of the left-hand panel. Follow steps two and three for information about further customization.

5. Convert the News Downloads

You need to make sure Calibre converts your downloaded news updates into a format that’s compatible with your ereader before you try to sync it.

To convert the news into another format, go to Preferences > Behavior and make sure the Preferred output format box is displaying your desired file type.

You also need to ensure that the checkbox next to Automatically send downloaded news to ebook reader is ticked.

6. Sync the News With Your Kindle

calibre share kindle news

To complete the process and automatically receive news updates on your Kindle, you need to set up Calibre’s sharing options.

You will need your unique email address that Amazon provided when you created your Kindle account on its servers. You can find it by logging into your Amazon account, going to Your Content and Devices, and clicking on the Devices tab.

Additionally, you need to authorize the email you will use to send the books (i.e. your primary email account) to your Kindle device. Within the Your Content and Devices section of your Amazon account, go to Preferences > Personal Document Configuration > Email Configuration and add your address.

Next, return to Calibre and go to Preferences > Sharing > Sharing books by email. Click on Add email, enter your Amazon Kindle email address, then tick the box in the Auto send column.

At the bottom of your screen, fill out your email provider’s data (hostname, port, username, and password). If you use Gmail, you will need to enable Less secure app access in your account settings.

You can press the Test button to make sure it’s all working correctly.

NB: You need to leave Calibre running for the app to be able to send news updates to your Kindle in real-time.

Other Ways to Keep on Top of the News

If you’re the type of person who spends all day with your head in your Kindle, the ability to also receive news updates on your device is awesome. So, why not harness the power of Calibre to make it happen.

People who are less addicted to reading might still prefer some of the other ways to stay on top of the latest headlines. If you’d like to learn more, we’ve previously written about the best news sites you can trust and the best free news apps.

The NanoPi NEO4: Is This the Raspberry Pi Killer?

nanopi-neo4

The Raspberry Pi is the undisputed king of cheap, small, single-board computers (SBCs). Since its 2012 release, it has sold over 25 million units, making it one of the most popular computers of all time.

Unsurprisingly, many competitors are trying to take the top spot with either cheaper hardware, more power, or interesting setups. One such competitor is the NanoPi NEO4, a unique challenger to the Pi.

What Is the NanoPi NEO4?

The NanoPi NEO4 Single Board Computer

The NanoPi NEO4 from FriendlyELEC is a $50 SBC in a smaller than average form factor. Measuring just 60 x 45mm it’s not much larger than a Raspberry Pi Zero. Despite its size, it features the Rockchip RK3399 chipset which combines dual and quad-core Cortex processors.

So it’s more powerful than any Raspberry Pi, smaller than most, and offers the same features. Could this be the Raspberry Pi Killer?

The NanoPi NEO4 in Numbers

Before taking a deeper dive into the NEO4, let’s look at the specs.

  • Processor: Rockchip RK3399 Dual-core Cortex-A72 and Quad-core Cortex-A53
  • RAM: 1GB DDR3-1866
  • USB: 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A, 1 x USB Type-C (Supports USB 2.0 OTG and Power input), 2 x USB 2.0 (1 Type-A, 1 via 2.54mm header)
  • Connectivity: Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPU: Mali-T864 GPU supports OpenGL ES1.1/2.0/3.0/3.1, OpenVG1.1, OpenCL, DX11, and AFBC
  • Video Processing: 4K VP9 and 4K 10bits H265/H264 60fps decoding, Dual VOP.
  • Storage: MicroSD up to 128GB, eMMC socket, SSD/HDD through PCIe
  • Media Output: Audio/Video via HDMI
  • Pin-Header: 40 x GPIO with SPI/UART/I2C, 2 x PCIe
  • Dimensions: 60 x 45mm
  • Weight: 30.25g
  • OS Support: Android 7.1.2 & 8.1 (eMMC Module required), Lubuntu 16.04 (32-bit), FriendlyCore 18.04 (64-bit), FriendlyDesktop 18.04 (64-bit), Armbian (3rd)

Buy: NanoPi NEO4 from FriendlyELEC

What NanoPi NEO4 Does Better Than Raspberry Pi

The Tiny NanoPi NEO4

At first glance, the NEO4 blows the Raspberry Pi out of the water. Its processor is much faster, and while it doesn’t have more memory, the DDR3 RAM is better quality. The addition of USB 3.0 and the extensibility that an eMMC port and PCI Express (PCIe) brings are also lacking on the Pi.

While size isn’t necessarily a factor for many, the tiny frame of the NEO4 will undoubtedly be a draw for those embedding the board into their hardware projects. It can support multiple operating systems and seems to fit into every place the Raspberry Pi already does. The extra $15 cost isn’t much for the additional features you get.

The Advantages of the NEO4

The Chunky NEO4 heatsink

The promise of 4K video will make the NEO4 an attractive upgrade to people using a Pi as a media server. The small size fits this use case well, and it’ll be even more suitable for mounting to the rear of a screen.

The powerful CPU will also make it highly desirable as a small server. FriendlyELEC provides the FriendlyDesktop/Core operating system based on Ubuntu 18.04, which supports Docker, making it perfect for modern container based web development.

Since the NEO4 has a PCIe port and supports Gigabit Ethernet, it would also make a powerful DIY NAS system. So far it seems like it has the Raspberry Pi beat. Is this all as good as it sounds?

The Disadvantages of the NEO4

As the thorough rundown in the video above by YouTuber MickMake shows, the 4K video capabilities seem a little spotty, among some other issues.

While this might be a deal breaker for many, most SMB media servers perform poorly with 4K, so the NEO4 isn’t alone. Anyone looking for a fully fledged media server should likely be looking for something more powerful.

Some users have reported that the FriendlyDesktop/Core 18.04 OS is not stable enough for day to day use. This won’t be a problem for power users who are happy about installing a new operating system or getting under the hood of the provided one. It could be a deal breaker for those looking for a day to day system, especially given that you can use the Raspberry Pi as a desktop computer without these issues.

Can NanoPi NEO4 Replace Your Raspberry Pi?

raspberry-pi

The NanoPi NEO4 looks attractive on the surface, but it’s unlikely to usurp the Raspberry Pi any time soon. Its small form factor is a big draw, but it’s also a drawback. No Raspberry Pi HATs will be fully compatible with the irregular sized GPIO pins.

What about the Pi Zero? The NEO4 certainly seems to have it beaten. While it is true that the NEO4 will outperform the Pi Zero, the bulky heatsink makes the size comparison unfair.

There’s nothing wrong with the NanoPi NEO4. It’s powerful, small, and feature packed. There just doesn’t seem to be anything that sets it aside other than its size. It runs into issues here and there, but in reality, almost all SBCs do.

Using a Raspberry Pi isn’t always plain sailing either. The difference is, the Pi’s popularity has generated a huge online community who have encountered the majority of problems before you.

Don’t count out FriendlyELEC just yet though, if you can stretch to $65 you can get the NanoPi M4. The optional 4GB of RAM make it one of the more powerful SBCs on the market. The M4 has the potential to be the real Pi killer.

Small Boards, Big Potential

The NanoPi NEO4 is an excellent little SBC, and well worth the $50 entry fee. It just doesn’t take what the Pi is and improve on it like the NodeMCU did to Arduino.

The beauty of almost all SBCs is that they are similar enough to be interchangeable. Whichever board you get, install Raspbian, then do something awesome with it!

Adopting a ratings system for social media like the ones used for film and TV won’t work

Analysts think global 5G smartphone shipments will overtake 4G in 2023

After years of buildup, 5G is finally here — albeit more as a trickle than a deluge. These things take time, of course. Carriers are adding coverage, city by city, promising dozens by years end. And as for hardware, early adopters have somewhere between one and three handsets to chose from, carrier dependent.

5G is pretty universally regarded as the next key mobile trend, but it’s not going to happen overnight. A new report from Canalys has 2023 as the true pivot point, when 5G handset shipments finally overtake 4G. That’s roughly five years, with 2019 included. Of course, that’s the global number, and these things will almost will almost certainly vary from market to market.

unnamed 2

The firm has 5G phones hitting 800 million shipments in 2023, which will comprise 51.4 percent of the global market for the year. That will bring the total shipments up to 1.9 billion since the first 5G capable devices were launched this year. North America will make up 18.8 percent of the market to Greater China’s 34 percent.

That’s big, continued growth for China, which surpassed the U.S. for the title of the largest smartphone market back in 2011. While the Chinese economy has slowed and taken its high end smartphone market with it, the country is well positioned to be an important player in the race to 5G.

“5G smartphones will see rapid adoption in China, thanks to a strong government technology roadmap and operators’ financial capabilities,” Canalys mobile VP Nicole Peng said in a statement. “China is also home to many major 5G equipment suppliers and smartphone vendors, which will be responsible for an aggressive marketing push over the next few years.”
