Google’s New Safe Folder Feature Keeps Your Files Secure

Google Files Safe Folder

Google is rolling out an important new privacy feature for users of its Files app. Called Safe Folder, the feature will you keep your files secure and locked down at all times.

The company announced the new feature in a post on The Keyword. It’s called Safe Folder, and it makes it so that if someone else grabs your phone, they won’t be able to access any of the files you’ve tucked away in this specific folder.

What Does Safe Folder Do?

With the new Safe Folder feature, you can create a 4-digit PIN-encrypted folder. It will lock as soon as you navigate away from it. You can use it to store documents, images, videos, and audio files in a place where only you can view them.

Anytime you move away from the folder and come back, the app will prompt you to enter your PIN. That makes it a perfect feature for anyone who frequently lets others use their phone.

You can use this to hide embarrassing files from friends. However, it could also be useful for hiding work files and folders from your kids, for example.

Even if you don’t regularly let others use your phone, an extra layer of security on specific files could be useful. If you store private work files in the cloud, locking them down with an extra layer could be a big deal.

How to Try the New Safe Folder Feature

Google’s Safe Folder is available right now for Files by Google users. You just need to make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of Files from Google Play.

Once you’ve updated the app, you need to launch it. Then, tap Browse, go to Collections, tap Safe Folder, enter your PIN, tap Next, re-enter your PIN, tap Next, and tap Got it.

From there, you’ll need to add files to your new Safe Folder, and you’ll have your data locked down and secure.
