The Windows 10 power button is, well, pretty powerful. Beyond just turning your computer on and off, there’s a lot more you can do with the physical button, as well as with your laptop or computer’s power options.
A handy little feature in Windows 10 is the ability to turn off your laptop display with just the press of the physical power button.
Turning Off a Laptop Screen With the Power Button
- Open Power Options. There are two ways you can do this: either right click the battery icon in your system tray and click Power Options, or open the Control Panel and click Power Options.
- Click Choose what the power buttons do.
- Under Define power buttons and turn on password protection, you should see a set of options for Power and sleep buttons and lid settings.
- For the first option, When I press the power button choose Turn off the display from the drop-down menu. If you’re using a laptop and want this feature to work whether you’re plugged in or using the laptop battery, be sure to change both options.
Other options other than turning off the display include putting your machine in Sleep or Hibernate modes or shutting down your computer. You can also choose a setting where nothing will happen if you push the power button.
Turning off your display is particularly useful if you want to quickly lock your computer before you step away from your desk. Just hit your power button to turn off the display, and it will automatically lock your computer. When you return, you’ll have to enter your Windows 10 password before resuming what you were doing.
If you prefer not to have to enter your password go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Under Require sign in select Never from the dropdown menu.
