Releasing PAWS and PAWS-X: Two New Datasets to Improve Natural Language Understanding Models

Word order and syntactic structure have a large impact on sentence meaning — even small perturbations in word order can completely change interpretation. For example, consider the following related sentences:
  1. Flights from New York to Florida.
  2. Flights to Florida from New York.
  3. Flights from Florida to New York.
All three have the same set of words. However, 1 and 2 have the same meaning — known as paraphrase pairs — while 1 and 3 have very different meanings — known as non-paraphrase pairs. The task of identifying whether pairs are paraphrase or not is called paraphrase identification, and this task is important to many real-world natural language understanding (NLU) applications such as question answering. Perhaps surprisingly, even state-of-the-art models, like BERT, would fail to correctly identify the difference between many non-paraphrase pairs like 1 and 3 above if trained only on existing NLU datasets. This is because existing datasets lack training pairs like this, so it is hard for machine learning models to learn this pattern even if they have the capability to understand complex contextual phrasings.

To address this, we are releasing two new datasets for use in the research community: Paraphrase Adversaries from Word Scrambling (PAWS) in English, and PAWS-X, an extension of the PAWS dataset to six typologically distinct languages: French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Both datasets contain well-formed sentence pairs with high lexical overlap, in which about half of the pairs are paraphrase and others are not. Including new pairs in training data for state-of-the-art models improves their accuracy on this problem from <50% to 85-90%. In contrast, models that do not capture non-local contextual information fail even with new training examples. The new datasets therefore provide an effective instrument for measuring the sensitivity of models to word order and structure.

The PAWS dataset contains 108,463 human-labeled pairs in English, sourced from Quora Question Pairs (QQP) and Wikipedia pages. PAWS-X contains 23,659 human translated PAWS evaluation pairs and 296,406 machine translated training pairs. The table below gives detailed statistics of the datasets.

† The training set of PAWS-X is machine translated from a subset of the PAWS Wiki dataset in English.
Creating the PAWS Dataset in English
In “PAWS: Paraphrase Adversaries from Word Scrambling,” we introduce a workflow for generating pairs of sentences that have high word overlap, but which are balanced with respect to whether they are paraphrases or not. To generate examples, source sentences are first passed to a specialized language model that creates word-swapped variants that are still semantically meaningful, but ambiguous as to whether they are paraphrase pairs or not. These were then judged by human raters for grammaticality and then multiple raters judged whether they were paraphrases of each other.
PAWS corpus creation workflow.
One problem with this swapping strategy is that it tends to produce pairs that aren't paraphrases (e.g., "why do bad things happen to good people" != "why do good things happen to bad people"). In order to ensure balance between paraphrases and non-paraphrases, we added other examples based on back-translation. Back-translation has the opposite bias as it tends to preserve meaning while changing word order and word choice. These two strategies lead to PAWS being balanced overall, especially for the Wikipedia portion.

Creating the Multilingual PAWS-X Dataset
After creating PAWS, we extended it to six more languages: Chinese, French, German, Korean, Japanese, and Spanish. We hired human translators to translate the development and test sets, and used a neural machine translation (NMT) service to translate the training set.
We obtained human translations (native speakers) on a random sample of 4,000 sentence pairs from the PAWS development set for each of the six languages (48,000 translations). Each sentence in a pair is presented independently so that translation is not affected by context. A randomly sampled subset was validated by a second worker. The final dataset has less than 5% word level error rate.
Note, we allowed professionals to not translate a sentence if it was incomplete or ambiguous. On average, less than 2% of the pairs were not translated, and we simply excluded them. The final translated pairs are split then into new development and test sets, ~2,000 pairs for each.
Examples of human translated pairs for German(de) and Chinese(zh).
Language Understanding with PAWS and PAWS-X
We train multiple models on the created dataset and measure the classification accuracy on the eval set. When trained with PAWS, strong models, such as BERT and DIIN, show remarkable improvement over when they are trained on the existing Quora Question Pairs (QQP) dataset. For example, on the PAWS data sourced from QQP (PAWS-QQP), BERT gets only 33.5 accuracy if trained on existing QQP, but it recovers to 83.1 accuracy when given PAWS training examples. Unlike BERT, a simple Bag-of-Words (BOW) model fails to learn from PAWS training examples, demonstrating its weakness at capturing non-local contextual information. These results demonstrate that PAWS effectively measures sensitivity of models to word order and structure.
Accuracy on PAWS-QQP Eval Set (English).
The figure below shows the performance of the popular multilingual BERT model on PAWS-X using several common strategies:
  1. Zero Shot: The model is trained on the PAWS English training data, and then directly evaluated on all others. Machine translation is not involved in this strategy.
  2. Translate Test: Train a model using the English training data, and machine-translate all test examples to English for evaluation.
  3. Translate Train: The English training data is machine-translated into each target language to provide data to train each model.
  4. Merged: Train a multilingual model on all languages, including the original English pairs and machine-translated data in all other languages.
The results show that cross-lingual techniques help, while it also leaves considerable headroom to drive multilingual research on the problem of paraphrase identification
Accuracy of PAWS-X Test Set using BERT Models.
It is our hope that these datasets will be useful to the research community to drive further progress on multilingual models that better exploit structure, context, and pairwise comparisons.

India’s Udaan raises $585M to expand its B2B e-commerce platform

Udaan, a three-year-old business-to-business e-commerce platform in India, has raised more than half a billion dollars as it looks to bring more kirana stores, chemists, and other small businesses online through its marketplace.

The startup said today it has raised $585 million from Tencent, Altimeter, Footpath Ventures, Hillhouse, GGV Capital and Citi Ventures. Existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners, which wrote its first check to the startup back in 2016, and DST Global also invested in the round.

The new round valued the startup between $2.3 billion to $2.7 billion, a person familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. Co-founders of Udaan, which reached the unicorn status in the shortest period of time among Indian startups, declined to comment on the valuation.

Udaan operates an eponymous B2B marketplace where it connects buyers and sellers. The platform supports a wide-range of categories from lifestyle, electronics, home and kitchen, staples, toys, to fruits and vegetables.

Udaan also offers a credit line to provide working capital to buyers and sellers on its platform, thereby addressing one of the biggest challenges faced by small and micro businesses and merchants in the nation, said Vaibhav Gupta, a co-founder of Udaan, in an interview with TechCrunch.

The startup has amassed more than 3 million retailers from 900 cities and towns in India. Today, a wide range of merchants, including farmers, shopkeeper owners, restaurants, chemists, and street vendors are connected to Udaan.

Sujeet Kumar, another co-founder of Udaan, said the startup will use the fresh capital to expand its footprint in the nation and focus on growing the marketplace in both existing and new categories.

Even as more than half a billion people in India are online today, most businesses in the nation remain offline. But a growing cohort of startups in the nation is beginning to help merchants make use of technology.

Amazon and Walmart have invested billions of dollars to create business-to-commerce marketplaces in India, but e-commerce still accounts for just 3% of the overall retail market in the country.

Their mightiest rivals remain mom and pop stores that dot tens of thousands of villages, cities, towns, and slums of India. In recent years, many Silicon Valley companies have also started to address these businesses. Google has launched tools to help these mom and pop stores set up their online presence, and last month, it launched a business app of Google Pay to help these merchants accept online payments.

That’s the opportunity that drove Vaibhav, Sujeet, and Amod Malviya — the third co-founder — to leave their jobs at e-commerce platform Flipkart and build a platform to serve small businesses in the nation.

“The market opportunity is turning out to be much deeper than we envisioned when Lightspeed led the company’s Series A financing in 2016 and we’re excited to continue supporting the company while welcoming a strong syndicate of new investors,” said Bejul Somaia, a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners.

In a statement, Martin Lau, President of Tencent, said, “Udaan’s unique approach can enhance the capabilities of millions of retail stores across India. It represents a powerful example of how technology can empower the business of small merchants, improve the efficiency of industries and bring benefits to consumers.”

Daily Crunch: Zuckerberg is wrong about TikTok

The Daily Crunch is TechCrunch’s roundup of our biggest and most important stories. If you’d like to get this delivered to your inbox every day at around 9am Pacific, you can subscribe here.

1. Zuckerberg misunderstands the huge threat of TikTok

In leaked audio of a Facebook all-hands meeting, Mark Zuckerberg described TikTok as “almost like the Explore Tab that we have on Instagram.” But Josh Constine argues that this is a serious misunderstanding of the app, which is more like a new form of social entertainment.

These distinctions matter because TikTok is a rapidly growing force in social media, a.k.a. a significant threat to Facebook and Instagram. And how can Zuckerberg beat what he doesn’t understand?

2. Microsoft’s latest Surface Laptop arrives in 13- and 15-inch models

Microsoft’s press event is currently underway as I write this newsletter, but it has already announced a new piece of hardware — the latest version of the Surface Laptop, with pricing starting at $999 for the 13-inch model.

3. Court says FCC’s ‘unhinged’ net neutrality repeal can’t stop state laws

The FCC’s repeal of net neutrality rules has been significantly weakened by a federal appeals court, which ruled that the Commission could not preempt state laws like those pending in California. In fact, one judge called the FCC’s logic “unhinged from the realities of modern broadband service.”

4. These are the top Y Combinator companies of all time, based on valuation

In October of 2018, Y Combinator published a mega list of the top 101 companies to have gone through the accelerator, as sorted by each company’s valuation. This morning they updated the list, with Airbnb and Stripe have swapping the top spots.

5. NASA launches a new planet-hunting telescope using a giant balloon

A new telescope will seek out planets that resemble Earth from a height of around 125,000 feet, using special optical technology that will filter out light from the stars they orbit to provide a better view.

6. Where top VCs are investing in edtech

New software, content and financing solutions for learning outside the traditional school system offer the more compelling business opportunities, particularly when it comes to vocational training. (Extra Crunch membership required.)

7. Streamlit launches open-source machine learning application development framework

Streamlit co-founder Adrien Treuille says that rather than building a one-size-fits-all machine learning tool, the key was developing a solution that was flexible enough to serve multiple requirements, depending on the nature of the data involved.

Google announces Action Blocks, a new accessibility tool for creating mobile shortcuts

Google today announced Action Blocks, a new accessibility tool that allows you to create shortcuts for common multi-step tasks with the help of the Google Assistant. In that respect, Action Blocks isn’t all that different from Shortcuts on iOS, for example, but Google is specifically looking at this as an accessibility feature for people with cognitive disabilities.

“If you’ve booked a rideshare using your phone recently, you’ve probably had to go through several steps: unlock your phone, find the right app, navigate through its screens, select appropriate options, and enter your address into the input box,” writes google accessibility software engineer Ajit Narayanan. “At each step, the app assumes that you’re able to read and write, find things by trial-and-error, remember your selections, and focus for a sustained period of time.”

Google’s own research shows that 80 percent of people with severe cognitive disabilities like advanced dementia, autism or Down syndrome don’t use smartphones, in part because of these barriers.

BedtimeStory 1

Action Blocks are essentially a sequence of commands for the Google Assistant, so everything the Assistant can do can be scripted using this new tool, no matter whether that’s starting a call or playing a TV show. Once the Action Block is set up, you can create a shortcut with a custom image on your phone’s home screen.

For now, the only way to get access to Action Blocks is to join Google’s trusted tester program. It’s unclear when this will roll out to a wider audience. When it does, though, I’m sure a wide variety of users will want to use of this feature .

Google rolls out new privacy tools for Maps, YouTube and Assistant

Google today announced a handful of new consumer privacy tools for some of its most-used products, including Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Assistant. The tools are meant to better allow users to control, manage and erase the data Google collects from those who use its services or prevent Google from collecting that data in the first place, in some cases.

In Google Maps, there’s now an incognito mode option that works similar to the one available in the Chrome browser and, more recently, YouTube.

The idea is that there are times when you don’t want Google to track your usage of Maps, including when you search for particular places or travel about town.

IncognitoMarketingGIF 2019.10.01

There are a number of reasons why you might want to opt-out of being tracked in Maps — maybe you don’t want to taint your personalized recommendations with irrelevant data. Or maybe you don’t like the idea that a company tracks your every search and precise location because that’s just creepy!

You can access incognito mode from the menu that appears when you tap on your profile photo in Maps. The feature launches on Android this month, with iOS to follow.

On YouTube, Google is launching the ability to auto-delete your YouTube History. This means you’re able to set a particular time period where you want to keep your YouTube History available, like 3 or 18 months. The rest will be deleted automatically. You can also choose to manually delete the history, if you prefer.

YT retention

Finally, Google is addressing privacy issues on Google Assistant.

You’ll be able to ask “Hey Google, how do you keep my data safe?” for more information, though it’s doubtful most consumers will ever think to utter this command.

More importantly, a new feature will launch in the next few weeks that will let you delete your Assistant activity with voice commands.

For example, “Hey Google, delete the last thing I said to you,” or “delete everything I said to you last week.”

If you need to delete further back than a week, the Assistant will direct you to the account settings page where you can make that happen. That’s a bit more cumbersome, but at least it puts the settings in closer reach than before.

The issues around voice assistants’ data retention have recently been making waves, as news media alerted consumers to the fact that these smart assistants weren’t exactly unmanned operations — actual humans were reviewing the retained voice log files in order to tweak and improve the assistants’ reactions and responses.

privacy actions last week 1

Google Assistant, Alexa and even Apple’s Siri came under fire for their lack of attention to privacy controls in this emerging area, and all three have now responded accordingly.

Amazon, for example, allows Alexa users to opt out of having recordings manually reviewed, and Apple suspended its Siri response grading program worldwide until it could address the issue with privacy controls through a future software update.

Google says its new voice commands for deleting Assistant data will roll out in the next few weeks, starting in English this week and all other languages next month.

In another security-related improvement, Google also said it would introduce a new feature called Password Checkup to its password manager that will tell you if any of your passwords are weak, whether you’ve reused them across multiple sites, or if Google has discovered they’ve been compromised.

PWCheckup Gif 1

This is a standard feature for most third-party password management apps, so it makes sense for Google to now incorporate it, as well.

Currently, this is available at passwords.google.com, but is being added to Chrome later this year.

Microsoft launches the ARM-based Surface Pro X

At its annual Surface hardware event, Microsoft today announced the long-rumored ARM-based Surface, the first time Microsoft itself has launched a device with an ARM-based processor inside. The 13-inch device will use Microsoft’s own custom SQ1 chip, based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and an AI accelerator, making it the first Surface with an integrated AI engine. Microsoft and Qualcomm also worked on building custom-designed GPU cores for the Pro X, which will run Microsoft’s version of Windows 10 for ARM.

Screen Shot 2019 10 02 at 7.47.57 AM

Microsoft started its flirtation with ARM-based devices a few years ago and that work culminated in the launch of a number of ARM-powered devices from HP, Asus and others, promising all-day battery life, the ability to still run almost every Windows application, and performance comparable to a lower-end Intel chip. To do this, Microsoft is using a binary translator that converts X86 instructions into ARM64 as necessary, while still compiling almost all of the native Windows 10 libraries for the ARM architecture.

Screen Shot 2019 10 02 at 7.43.20 AM

Like Microsoft’s other new Surface devices, the 13-inch ARM-based Pro X will feature USB-C ports. The screen features a 1400:1 contrast ratio and a 2880×1920 resolution and can be extended to a 4k screen. At its thinnest point, the Pro x is 5.3mm thin and weighs 1.68 pounds. There’s also a removable hard-drive, a first for the Surface line.

Together with Qualcomm, Microsoft designed its own custom processor for this, the SQ1. Microsoft stressed the work the team did on building an AI engine into the chipset.

Microsoft also launched a new, slimmer Surface pen for the Pro X, which will feature its own storage space on the new Type Cover for the device.

It’s no secret that ARM itself has worked hard to bring its chip designed to laptops, desktops and servers. With every new generation of its design, the company talks about how it wants to get more of its chips into these machines, especially now that their performance is often more than adequate for many use cases. With this Microsoft partnership, it’s definitely getting a bit closer to this.

What the US health care system assumes about you | Mitchell Katz

The US health care system assumes many things about patients: that they can take off from work in the middle of the day, speak English, have a working telephone and a steady supply of food. Because of that, it's failing many of those who are most in need, says Mitchell Katz, CEO of the largest public health care system in the US. In this eye-opening talk, he shares stories of the challenges low-income patients face -- and how we can build a better system for all.

UK privacy ‘class action’ complaint against Google gets unblocked

The UK Court of Appeal has unanimously overturned a block on a class-action style lawsuit brought on behalf of four million iPhone users against Google — meaning the case can now proceed to be heard.

The High Court tossed the suit a year ago on legal grounds. However the claimants sought permission to appeal — and today that’s been granted.

The case pertains to allegations Google used tracking cookies to override iPhone users’ privacy settings in Apple’s Safari browser between 2011 and 2012. Specifically that Google developed a workaround for browser settings that allowed it to set its DoubleClick Ad cookie without iPhone users’ knowledge or consent.

In 2012 the tech giant settled with the FTC over the same issue — agreeing to pay $22.5M to resolve the charge that it bypassed Safari’s privacy settings to serve targeted ads to consumers. Although Google’s settlement with the FTC did not include an admission of any legal wrongdoing.

Several class action lawsuits were also filed in the US and later consolidated. And in 2016 Google agreed to settle those by paying $5.5M to educational institutions or non-profits that campaign to raise public awareness of online security and privacy. Though terms of the settlement remain under legal challenge.

UK law does not have a direct equivalent to a US style class action. But in 2017 a veteran consumer rights campaigner, Richard Lloyd, filed a collective lawsuit over the Safari workaround, seeking to represent millions of UK iPhone users whose browser settings his complaint alleges were ignored by Google’s tracking technologies.

The decision a High Court judge last year to block the action boiled down to the judge not being convinced claimants could demonstrate a basis for bringing a compensation claim. Historically there’s been a high legal bar for that as UK law has required that claimants are able to demonstrate they suffered damage as a result of data protection violation.

The High Court judge was also not persuaded the complaint met the requirements for a representative action.

However the Appeals Court has taken a different view.

The three legal questions it considered were whether a claimant could recover damages for loss of control of their data under section 13 of the UK’s Data Protection Act 1998 “without proving pecuniary loss or distress”; whether the members of the class had the same interest as one another and were identifiable; and whether the judge ought to have exercised discretion to allow the case to proceed.

The court rejected Google’s main argument that UK and EU law require “proof of causation and consequential damage”.

It also took the view that the claim can stand as a representative procedure.

In concluding the judgment, the chancellor of the High Court writes:

… the judge ought to have held: (a) that a claimant can recover damages for loss of control of their data under section 13 of DPA, without proving pecuniary loss or distress, and (b) that the members of the class that Mr Lloyd seeks to represent did have the same interest under CPR Part 19.6(1) and were identifiable.

The judge exercised his discretion as to whether the action should proceed as a representative action on the wrong basis and this court can exercise it afresh. If the other members of the court agree, I would exercise our discretion so as to allow the action to proceed.

I would, therefore, allow the appeal, and make an order granting Mr Lloyd permission to serve the proceedings on Google outside the jurisdiction of the court.

Mishcon de Reya, the law firm representing Lloyd, has described the decision as “groundbreaking” — saying it could establish “a new procedural framework for the conduct of mass data breach claims” under UK civil procedure rules governing group litigations.

In a statement, partner and case lead, James Oldnall, said: This decision is significant not only for the millions of consumers affected by Google’s activity but also for the collective action landscape more broadly. The Court of Appeal has confirmed our view that representative actions are essential for holding corporate giants to account. In doing so it has established an avenue to redress for consumers.”

Mishcon de Reya argues that the decision has confirmed a number of key legal principles around UK data protection law and representative actions, including that:

  • An individual’s personal data has an economic value and loss of control of that data is a violation of their right to privacy which can, in principle, constitute damage under s.13 of the DPA, without the need to demonstrate pecuniary loss or distress. The Court, can therefore, award a uniform per capita sum to members of the class in representative actions for the loss of control of their personal data
  • That individuals who have lost control of their personal data have suffered the same loss and therefore share the “same interest” under CPR 19.6
  • That representative actions are, in practice, the only way that claims such as this can be pursued

Responding to the judgement, a Google spokesperson told us: “Protecting the privacy and security of our users has always been our number one priority. This case relates to events that took place nearly a decade ago and that we addressed at the time. We believe it has no merit and should be dismissed.”

6 Free Hash Checkers to Check the Integrity of Any File

hash-checkers

At times when you download files online, you are provided with a file hash to check the integrity of the file. Rightly or wrongly, most people ignore file hash verification, the assumption being that if the file is malicious, the site owner would realize and take it down. That or their antivirus would stomp out the suspicious download before it executes.

Wondering how you check the file hash? Here are six tools you can use to verify the file you’re downloading is safe.

1. Check File Hash Using PowerShell

Handily, Windows comes with an integrated file hash checker. It is a PowerShell function, and it is easy to use. The PowerShell file hash check function supports SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, MACTripleDES, MD5, and RIPEMD160.

Here’s how you check a file hash using PowerShell.

First, press the Windows Key, then type PowerShell. Select the best match to open PowerShell. The basic file hash check command is:

get-filehash FILEPATH

For example, “get-filehash c:\test.txt” which gives you following output:

powershell getfile hash check

The default hash output is in SHA256. If you want a different hash value for the file, use the following command:

get-filehash -Algorithm [HASH TYPE] FILEPATH

For example, “get-filehash -Algorithm SHA384 c:\test.txt” now gives the following output:

powershell getfile hash check sha387

The time it takes to generate a hash depends on the size of the file and the algorithm you use.

2. Hash Generator

hash generator generate file hash

SecurityExploded’s Hash Generator is an easy to use hash generation tool that accommodates a wide range of hashing algorithms. The free hash tool can generate hashes for MD5, SHAxxx, Base64, LM, NTLM, CRC32, ROT13, RIPEMD, ALDER32, HAVAL, and more.

It is one of the most comprehensive hashing tools around.

What’s great about Hash Generator is that you can use it for any number of situations. Want a hash for a specific piece of text? Just copy the text into Hash Generator. Want to create a file hash quickly in File Explorer? Use the Hash Generator option in your right-click context menu.

You can also drag and drop a file into Hash Generator, and it’ll start working immediately.

Download: Hash Generator for Windows (Free)

3. HashMyFiles

hashmyfiles folder generate hashes

Ever-present software developers Nirsoft’s HashMyFiles is a handy portable hash generator. Setting it aside from most tools, HashMyFiles allows for batch hash generation. You can load up HashMyFiles with a list of files you want the hash for, set it to work, and receive hashes for the entire list.

HashMyFiles will display hashes for MD5, SHAxxx, and CRC32. Like Hash Generator, you can add a HashMyFiles entry to your right-click context menu. However, HashMyFiles allows you to add an entire folder for hashing via the context menu, rather than the single file option of Hash Generator.

Download: HashMyFiles for Windows (32-bit) | Windows (64-bit) (Both Free)

4. HashTab

hashtab extra hashes comparison

HashTab is a different take on file hash generation. Rather than using a separate interface to generate your file hashes, HashTab adds a tab to your Properties menu. Then, instead of dragging and dropping a file into the program, you right-click the file, select Properties, and open the File Hashes tab.

HashTab generates hashes for MD5, CRC32, and SHA1 by default. The HashTab options allow you to add hashes for over 25 additional hashes, including the SHA family, RIPEMD, TIGER, and WHIRLPOOL.

You can add more hashes to the File Hashes tab by opening the Properties menu, selecting the File Hashes tab, and selecting Settings. Check the hashes you want to add and press OK.

Another nice HashTab feature is the integrated file checker. You can cross-reference any file from the File Hashes tab using the Compare a File menu option.

Download: HashTab for Windows (Free Personal License)

5. QuickHash

QuickHash hash generation

QuickHash is an open-source hash generator for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is also one of the most fully featured hash generation and checking options on this list.

Although the number of hashes you can use is small—just MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512, and xxHash64—Quick Hash has a heap of additional functions.

QuickHash can hash an entire folder, compare two individual files, compare entire directories, or an entire disk. Of course, the latter takes a substantial amount of time due to the size, but the option is nice to see. You can also work through a text document line by line, hashing each one as you go.

6. MultiHasher

Multi Hasher hash generation and checking

MultiHasher presents users with a wide array of hash generation and checking tools in a single package. Like many of the best hash generation and checking programs, MultiHasher has several hashing options. You can drag and drop a single file or an entire folder for hashing or generate a hash for a text string.

MultiHasher outputs hashes in MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, or RIPEMD-160.

MultiHasher also has a feature I haven’t seen in any other file hash generator and checker: it integrates the malicious file checking database of VirusTotal. You can check the hash of the downloaded file matches the download source, as well as inform VirusTotal of anything untoward or malicious at the same time.

To use the VirusTotal query, select a file hash from your list, then head to Tools > Query VirusTotal.

How Do You Verify the Integrity of a File?

Checking the hash of the downloaded file is a quick and easy way to verify that your file is safe. If the downloaded file is malicious or has been tampered with in any way, the resulting hash will differ from the hash the website gives you.

Of course, not all websites offer you the chance to cross-reference a file hash to ensure file integrity.

In all honesty, most people don’t take the time to vet their downloads, and as such, many major websites don’t offer file hashing comparisons.

Also, many websites don’t need to offer specific file hashing because they use integrated driver signing or a Certificate Authority to sign their software. In these cases, the operating system won’t allow the software to install or run as it does not match an officially recognized software signature.

However, the system is far from perfect, which is why many people prefer to cross-reference their software using a file hash generation and checking tool. Want to understand more about encryption and hashing? Here are ten basic encryption terms everyone should know and understand!

The 5 Best Games to Play on Apple Arcade

apple-arcade-games

Apple Arcade is a new video subscription service from Apple that costs a modest $4.99/mo (with a 1-month free trial) that grants full access to a library of 100+ games on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TV devices.

Games on Apple Arcade are ad-free, have no in-app purchases (zero microtransactions), and have no always-on DRM. Subscribers can download the games to play, share access with up to six family members, and continue gameplay progress across all of the supported operating systems.

But is it worth it? Here are the best games on Apple Arcade that make the subscription worth its price tag.

1. Shinsekai Into the Depths

What happens when Metroid meets Subnautica?

In this vibrant underwater world, players discover a zombie-free twist on postapocalyptic living. During your quest, the player battles sea monsters, pilots submarines, and explores the depths while seeking an ancient civilization.

If you’re looking for a console competitor-tier title, Shinsekai possesses the pedigree to stand on its own as a 2D platformer. The game possesses simple controls, but it makes mastery all the more awarding and important.

Beyond the gameplay, Capcom did an extravagant job to make a player-immersive world. All of the music and sound effects were recorded underwater for added authenticity. The world teems with aquatic life and colors. Even the base graphical design of the HUD pushes away from the typical clean, minimalistic design that’s popular amongst the mobile genre for some wavier, rustic machine text.

If you’re looking for a game to get lost in, Shinsekai’s world and gameplay will give you plenty of reason to be an early adopter with this AAA-grade launch title.

2. Hot Lava

First-person parkour meets childhood game meets cartoon cel-shaded graphical style.

At first, fond memories of the Mirror’s Edge franchise surfaces. Skirting from platform to platform in speedy acrobatic succession comes seamlessly as players hop from spot-to-spot to avoid threatening lava.

Rather than limit its existence to a nostalgia trip, the game provides all the speed-run essentials. Online multiplayer and leaderboards allow both the intrepid soloist and group player to compete for the best time score with equal fervor.

The fast-paced thrill of going for a better time and smashing a record serves as the core of the game. Players can run, bounce, swing, and climb against the best. Checkpoints are plentiful and help to encourage the player to experience the full gauntlet of challenges.

For those that grew up on death run maps on Team Fortress 2 and CS:GO, Hot Lava provides a new addition to a forgotten game mode. As a launch title, the community aspect makes it a very promising mainstay for your device.

Whether looking for nostalgia or competition, Hot Lava offers a welcome distraction.

3. Sayonara Wild Hearts

A self-titled pop-culture video game comes next in our list.

Beautiful, eclectic, and neon. This game manages to draw all these together and provide so much more.

Despite the sheer visual splendor that needs to be experienced, Sayonara Wild Hearts can also be a very polarizing game. As beautiful as the game’s visuals are, it still faces judgment as more of a short, interactive music video than a game.

Despite this, I needed to include this title because it perfectly encompasses the purpose of the Apple Arcade subscription. Gamers don’t have to tightly clutch their piggy banks since it’s not about maximizing one game’s true potential (albeit possible) but more about experiencing and enjoying a continuous stream of titles.

Sayonara Wild Hearts creates a captivating short yet must-play entry experience through the seamlessness of gameplay, art, and music that might otherwise be overlooked due to price tag.

4. Where Cards Fall

In a breaking change of pace from the above-posted title, Where Cards Fall tells a captivating coming-of-age story with a much more relaxing stride. The simplistic puzzle game follows the traditional trend of getting the player from one part of the stage to the other.

As one might expect from the title, the twist to the classic formula comes with the cards. The player utilizes cards to circumvent obstacles. At set moments, these cards will stack up and transform into houses to help advance the journey along.

Upon completion of the stage, the player experiences a flashback sequence showing a bit of the youth’s life albeit without any clear language. It leaves the experience more peaceful and interpretive to the viewer’s eyes.

As an Apple Arcade exclusive, Where Cards Fall stands strongly as another thought-provoking piece in their catalog.

5. Bleak Sword

As the onslaught of retro-style difficulty and Souls series lookalikes continue, the mobile sphere had laid mostly empty until now. After the much-accoladed release of Blasphemous, an 8-bit challenger arises with a similar skill set of parry, attack, counter, and roll (dodge).

Despite the comparisons to other popular franchises, Bleak Sword can very much stand on its own. The generated arenas only hold so many enemies, and the stages don’t last more than a minute or less. Rather than a full Metroidvania to contend with, the player gets to focus on the satisfying combat elements while facing diverse sets of monsters.

The combat exchange all has a real sense of weight to it which complements the mobile control scheme. To further keep the player focused, the art design utilizes a minimalistic basic black, white, and red to make only the really important details stand out in combat.

For anyone seeking an episodic challenge between busy moments of life, Bleak Sword can offer a welcome respite.

Apple’s Worthy Subscription

Unlike many subscriptions at launch, Apple Arcade came out the gate with a very strong catalog of titles. For those hesitant to take the free trial, I would encourage you to test these five titles and experience a taste of this worthy boon to gamers.

For those without iOS devices, the wait for Apple Arcade to hit additional Apple devices doesn’t have to be excruciating. In the meantime, check out the best Mac games to play.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Which One Is Right for You?

iphone11-vs-11pro

iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro? Are they the same? Which one should you get? We know you have a lot of questions about Apple’s three new flagship devices, so we’re here to set the record straight.

The truth is that neither phone is necessarily better than the other. It all comes down to your personal needs and what you expect from your smartphone. In this article, we’ll look into the key differentiating factors between Apple’s new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro to help you decide which one is right for you.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Performance

Both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro series share the very same A13 Bionic processor. The A13 Bionic chip is a pretty solid upgrade over last year’s A12, and it’s the fastest CPU and GPU ever in a smartphone, according to Apple. The two handsets also boast 4GB of RAM, which will be great for keeping lots of apps open in the background and running games. Pro or not, you’ll have the best performance in the industry any way you slice it.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Camera

iPhone 11 has a dual-camera system while iPhone 11 Pro has a triple-camera system. Let’s look at how that impacts camera quality.

Both the basic and Pro models contain wide and ultra-wide lenses. The ultra-wide lens allows you to take stunning photos with wide aspect ratios—no need to move back for a better shot. Both smartphones also come with industry-leading low light capabilities which beat even the Google Pixel 3a, a phone that has been known for being awesome in this regard.

The two models are also slated to receive Deep Fusion at a later date via a software update. Deep Fusion is a feature that will computationally enhance and sharpen your pictures, something that Apple has referred to as “computational photography mad science.”

The one camera advantage that the iPhone 11 Pro has over the base iPhone 11 is the inclusion of a third telephoto lens. This third lens will allow you to zoom into images without sacrificing any quality, something which will be very useful if you ever want to take a picture of an object from far away.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Display

  • iPhone 11: 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD, 1792×828 resolution @ 326 PPI
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 5.8-inch Super Retina XDR OLED, 2436×1125 resolution @ 458 PPI
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED, 2688×1242 resolution @ 458 PPI

The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro have two very distinct display technologies. The Pro models have higher-fidelity OLED displays with inky blacks, high contrast ratios, and HDR10 support. OLED can also display much higher brightness and can help you save battery.

But while OLED may sound like a superior technology, it does come with one major caveat: burn-in. Burn-in is when an image becomes permanently ingrained into your display as a result of usage over time.

While we do have a couple of tricks to avoid screen burn-in, LCD is still much safer. It has a near-zero risk of burn-in because it isn’t an organic technology and does not degrade with time. Also, consider that most of us can’t tell the difference between higher-resolution OLED and LCD, so OLED may not be that superior after all.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Physical Size

The iPhone 11 Pro comes in 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch models, so there are more options for more people. The base iPhone 11 is in the middle with its 6.1-inch model. If you have medium- or large-sized hands, the iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro Max will be great. If you’re on the smaller side though, you’ll probably find that those two will feel monstrous in the hand, so the smaller iPhone 11 Pro is probably your best bet.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Build

iPhone 11 comes in an array of splendid pastel colors: Black, Product Red, Purple, Green, Yellow, and White. The Pro models come in much darker and sleeker colorways: Silver, Space Grey, Gold, and Midnight Green.

Like its predecessor—the iPhone XR—the iPhone 11 is built on an aluminum band and a glossy glass back. On the other hand, the iPhone 11 Pro has a luxurious stainless steel band and matte-finish glass back. Thanks to its shiny steel frame, the 11 Pro will be much more durable in drops, as aluminum is prone to chip away when dropped. Of course, you can always combat aluminum damage with a sturdy case.

In terms of water resistance, the iPhone 11 Pro crushes the iPhone 11. The iPhone 11 Pro can withstand up a depth of 4 meters for around 30 minutes, while the iPhone 11 can only withstand 2 meters for 30 minutes.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Battery Life

  • iPhone 11: 3,110 mAh battery
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 3,046 mAh battery
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 3,969 mAh battery

All of Apple’s 2019 iPhones come equipped with significant battery improvements. iPhone 11 has 1 more hour of battery life than the amazing iPhone XR, the lower-end iPhone that led the pack in terms of battery last year. This year, it’s different. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are now leaps ahead of any iPhone when it comes to battery life.

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have 4 and 5 more hours of battery life than iPhone XS and XS Max, respectively. This is incredible and beats a wide variety of Android flagships. Additionally, the Pro versions come with an 18W fast charger, which can charge your iPhone to 50% in just 30 minutes!

All things considered, both phones will probably last you the whole day, but the higher-end models simply go above and beyond.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: Price

Let’s now talk about pricing. This will probably be a key factor for you if you’re on a budget. Below are the prices of the three smartphones and their different storage variants:

  • iPhone 11: $699 (64GB) / $749 (128GB) / $849 (256GB)
  • iPhone 11 Pro: $999 (64GB) / $1,149 (256GB) / $1,349 (512GB)
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: $1,099 (64GB) / $1,249 (256GB) / $1,449 (512GB)

The biggest takeaway here is that for less than what a 64GB iPhone 11 Pro costs, you can get a maxed-out iPhone 11 with 256GB of storage.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 11 Pro: It’s Your Call

If you just want an awesome smartphone with an advanced processor that’s available in fun colors, then the affordable iPhone 11 is your friend. But if you want a cutting-edge phone that has it all, plus an epic display, tremendous battery life, extra camera capabilities, and if you’re able to afford it, then the iPhone 11 Pro is for you.

Regardless of which model you go for, you may also want to take a look at our guide to properly buying an iPhone.
