Apple could bundle TV, music and news in a single subscription


According to a report from The Information, Apple could choose to bundle all its media offerings into a single subscription. While Apple’s main media subscription product is currently Apple Music, it’s no secret that the company is investing in other areas.

In particular, Apple has bought the distribution rights of many TV shows. But nobody knows how Apple plans to sell those TV shows. For instance, you could imagine paying a monthly fee to access Apple’s content in the TV app on your iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

In addition to that, Apple acquired Texture back in March. Texture lets you download and read dozens of magazines with a single subscription. The company has partnered with Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corp., Rogers Communications, and Time Inc. to access their catalog of magazines

Texture is still available, but it’s clear that Apple has bigger plans. In addition to reformatting and redistributing web content in the Apple News app, the company could add paid content from magazines.

Instead of creating three different subscriptions (with potential discounts if you subscribe to multiple services), The Information believes that Apple is going to create a unified subscription. It’s going to work a bit like Amazon Prime, but without the package deliveries.

For a single monthly or annual fee, you’ll be able to access Apple Music, Apple TV’s premium content and Apple News’ premium content.

Even if you don’t consume everything in the subscription, users could see it as a good value, which could reduce attrition.

With good retention rates and such a wide appeal, it could help Apple’s bottom line now that iPhone unit sales are only growing by 0.5 percent year over year. It’s still unclear when Apple plans to launch its TV and news offerings.

If you look closely at the original case, it feels like it happened many decades ago. At some point, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, the Nexus S and a few other devices looked a lot like the iPhone 3G.

But now, it’s hard to say that Samsung is copying Apple. For instance, Samsung is one of the only phone manufacturers that hasn’t switched to a notch design. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the rest of the product lineup still features a rectangular display . Huawei, LG, OnePlus, Asus and countless of others sell devices with a notch.

That could be the reason why it seems weird to spend all this money on legal fees for things that are no longer true.

And yet, the irony is that Apple and Samsung are the perfect example of asymmetric competition. They both sell smartphones, laptops and other electronics devices. But they also work together on various projects.

In particular, the iPhone X is the first iPhone with an OLED display. It’s a better display technology compared to traditional LCD displays. It’s also one of the most expensive components of the iPhone X.

According to Bloomberg, Apple wants to find a second supplier to drive component prices down. And that second supplier is LG.

LG already manufactures OLED displays. But it’s difficult to meet Apple’s demands when it comes to the iPhone. Apple sells tens of millions of smartphones every year. So you need to have a great supply chain to be able to become an Apple supplier. LG could be ramping up its production capacity for future iPhone models.

According to multiple rumors, Apple plans to ship an updated iPhone X with an OLED display as well as a bigger iPhone. The company could also introduce another phone with an edge-to-edge LCD display with a notch and a cheaper price.

There’s one thing for sure, it’ll take time to switch the entire iPhone lineup to OLED displays.

How to Switch From Photoshop to GIMP: 5 Steps to Ease Your Transition

With the release of version 2.10, GIMP is now a truly viable alternative to Photoshop. So is it the right time to cancel your Adobe subscription and adopt this free open-source image editing package that works on every platform?

If you’re ready to make the jump to GIMP, you’ll discover things work differently to how they are in Photoshop. But once you find your way around, you’ll be able to unlock GIMP’s power as a graphic design and photo editing tool.

Go ahead and download GIMP and let’s get started.

Step 1: Find Your Way Around GIMP

The first thing to do when switching to any new piece of software is to master its interface so you can find your way around quickly. GIMP has long had a reputation for being complicated to use—as it was created by engineers rather than designers—but things have improved in version 2.10.

It’s still different, but the new layout and theme should make it far less alien to Photoshop users.

GIMP 2.10 now opens as a single window, unlike previous versions where each panel was held in its own self-contained window. There’s less ability to customize your workspace than in Photoshop, but you can add tabs to the right hand docks at Windows > Dockable Dialogs.

The Layout

The default layout is clean and accessible. The canvas is in the center. The top left houses the Toolbox, laid out as a grid. This is GIMP’s version of the Toolbar.

Bottom left is the Tool Options dock. This is the equivalent to the Options Bar in Photoshop. The settings differ based on what tool you’ve got selected. It also contains a tab for your graphics tablet, to view Undo levels, and to manage all your open images.

Top right is a dock that you can customize with your own choice of tabs. You can add things like a histogram, swatches, brushes, and fonts.

On the bottom right you’ve got the dock for layers, channels, and paths. This is very similar to what you get in Photoshop. You can choose blend modes and opacity, lock layers, and create masks.

Step 2: Tweak the Settings to Your Liking

Next up, it’s time to change a few settings to help make GIMP function a little more like Photoshop. These are all down to taste, of course, but we’ve picked a few common ones you’re likely to want to get started.

First, go to View > Snap to Grid. This causes all your objects to snap into place when you move them. It makes it much easier to keep things aligned.

Next, go to View > Show Layer Boundary. By default, GIMP shows a yellow dotted line around the edge of your background layer. This turns it off.

Get images to open faster at Edit > Preferences > Image Import & Export > Convert to preferred RGB color profile. Without this, GIMP will ask you which color profile to use every time you open an image.

Finally, clean up the Toolbox by going to Edit > Preferences > Interface > Toolbox and deselecting some of the transform tools. You no longer need them all as the new Unified Transform has combined them into a single tool akin to Photoshop’s Free Transform.

Step 3: Learn the GIMP Keyboard Shortcuts

Learning keyboard shortcuts is an essential way to speed up your workflow. GIMP has lots of them. Some are the same as they are in Photoshop, others aren’t. Here’s a rundown of some of the ones you’ll use most often. If you’re on a Mac, replace Ctrl with Cmd.

  • New image: Ctrl+N
  • New image from clipboard: Shift+Ctrl+V
  • Open multiple images as layers: Ctrl+Alt+O
  • Save image: Ctrl+S
  • Undo: Ctrl+Z (repeat to go back multiple steps)

  • Paste as new image: Shift+Ctrl+V

  • Swap colors: X
  • Fill with foreground color: Ctrl+Comma

In time these shortcuts will become second nature. However, at first you might find your muscle memory keeps kicking in, and you’re hitting Photoshop keyboard shortcuts instead.

There’s a simple solution to this: You can manually set up your own keyboard shortcuts for GIMP actions. Go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts to do this.

Step 4: Learn What Tools Are Called

One of the things that has always made the GIMP learning curve seem so steep is that many of the most common tools are named differently than Photoshop’s tools. Not only that, but the names can be pretty obtuse too.

Here’s a quick list of the main Photoshop tools and their GIMP counterparts:

  • Rectangular Marquee > Rectangle Select
  • Elliptical Marquee > Ellipse Select
  • Lasso > Free Select
  • Magic Wand > Fuzzy Select
  • Free Transform > Unified Transform
  • Paint Bucket > Bucket Fill

There’s similar confusion when you’re trying to perform common tasks. The appropriate tools aren’t always found where you’d expect them to be.

For example, the Noise Reduction tool, designed to help you achieve noise-free photos, is located under Filters > Enhance. You’ll find the Unsharp Mask tool here, too.

You’ll find the tools for post-processing your photos under the Colors menu. And general graphics tools, including text, paths, paint, and colors, are all clumped together under the Tools menu.

Step 5: Understand GIMP File Formats

GIMP saves files in the XCF format by default. There’s a new version for GIMP 2.10 that promises better compression for smaller file sizes, but this is not compatible with older versions of GIMP.

You should be wary of using this format at all if you plan on sharing your file with anyone else. There’s no guarantee that non-GIMP users will be able to open it.

There’s always the option to save your files in a more mainstream format. Go to File > Export, then click Select File Type to see your available options. There’s heaps of supported formats, including PSD for Photoshop.

Click Export once you’ve made your choice.

The GIMP Experience Isn’t Much Different

Now you’re set. Once you get used to GIMP you’ll start to find it becomes a lot more familiar and usable than it first appears. And lots of the smaller navigation tricks you’re used to from Photoshop still work.

Like, you can place guides on your image by dragging down from the rulers, or you can adjust the brush size or other sliders with the scroll wheel or cursor keys.

GIMP slow

The biggest difference you’ll have to get used to is that GIMP is undeniably slower than Photoshop. Even fairly basic tasks like filling colors or drawing lines take their time.

What’s Missing in GIMP?

GIMP can’t do everything Photoshop can. The most common deal-breaker is that GIMP does not have native CMYK support, meaning it isn’t suitable for professional print work.

Less important, but still noticeable, is the absence of adjustment layers, making non-destructive editing harder to achieve. And some of Photoshop’s smarter features, like content-aware fill, are also missing. You can get plugins to replace these.

Support for Actions is also limited. It is possible to use them, but you have to code GIMP scripts manually.

Is It Time to Switch to GIMP?

GIMP 2.10 is a decent substitute for Photoshop. Yes, it lacks some of the polish and there’s a bit of a learning curve, but if you want to save some money, or just don’t like Adobe’s subscription model, it’s well worth a look.

Instead of points, Bumped gives equity in the companies you shop at


What does brand loyalty even mean anymore? App downloads, points, stars, and other complex reward systems have not just spawned their own media empires trying to decipher them, they have failed at their most basic objective: building a stronger bond between a brand and its consumers.

Bumped wants to reinvent the loyalty space by giving consumers shares of the companies they shop at. Through Bumped’s app, consumers choose their preferred retailer in different categories (think Lowe’s vs The Home Depot in home improvement), and when they spend money at that store using a linked credit card, Bumped will automatically give them ownership in that company.

The startup, which is based in Portland and was founded in March 2017, announced the beta launch of its service today, as well as a $14.1 million series A led by Dan Ciporin at Canaan Partners, along with existing seed investors Peninsula Ventures, Commerce Ventures, and Oregon Venture Partners.

Bumped is a brokerage, and the company told me that it has passed all FINRA and SEC licensing. When consumers spend money at participating retailers, they receive bona fide shares in the companies they shop at. Each retailer determines a loyalty percentage rate, which is a minimum of 1% and can go up to 5%. Bumped then buys shares off the public market to reward consumers, and in cases where it needs to buy fractional shares, it will handle all of those logistics.

For founder and CEO David Nelsen, the startup doesn’t just make good business sense, it can have a wider social impact of democratizing access to the public equity markets. “A lot of brands need to build an authentic relationship with the customers,” he explained to me. “The brands that have a relationship with consumers, beyond price, are thriving.” With Bumped, Nelsen’s goal is to “align the interests of a shareholder and consumer, and everybody wins.”

His mission is to engage more Americans into the equity markets and the power of ownership. He notes that far too many people fail to setup their 401k, and don’t invest regularly in the stock market, citing a statistic that only 13.9% of people directly own a share of stock. By offering shares, he hopes that Bumped engages consumers to think about their relationship to companies in a whole new way. As Nelsen put it, “we are talking about bringing a whole new class of shareholders into the market.”

This isn’t the first time that Nelsen has built a company in the loyalty space. He previously was a co-founder and CEO of Giftango, a platform for prepaid digital gift cards that was acquired by InComm in late 2012.

That previously experience has helped the company build an extensive roster for launch. Bumped has 19 brands participating in the beta, including Chipotle, Netflix, Shake Shack, Walgreens, and The Home Depot. Another 6 brands are currently papering contracts with the firm.

Ciporin of Canaan said that he wanted to fund something new in the loyalty space. “There has been just a complete lack of innovation in the loyalty space,” he explained to me. “I think about it as Robinhood meets airline points programs.” One major decider for Ciporin in making the investment was academic research, such as this paper by Jaakko Aspara, showing that becoming a shareholder in a company tended to make consumers significantly more loyal to those brands.

In the short run, Bumped heads into a crowded loyalty space that includes companies like Drop, which I have covered before on TechCrunch. Nelsen believes that the stock ownership model is “an entirely different mechanism” in loyalty, and that makes it “hard to compare” to other loyalty platforms.

Longer term, he hints at exploring how to offer this sort of equity loyalty model to small and medium businesses, a significantly more complex challenge given the lack of liquid markets for their equity. Today, the company is exclusively focused on publicly-traded companies.

Bumped today has 14 people, and is targeting a team size of around 20 employees.

5 of the Most Famous Computer Viruses and Their Terrible Impact

Yet another massive Facebook fail: Quiz app leaked data on ~120M users for years


Facebook knows the historical app audit it’s conducting in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica data misuse scandal is going to result in a tsunami of skeletons tumbling out of its closet.

It’s already suspended around 200 apps as a result of the audit — which remains ongoing, with no formal timeline announced for when the process (and any associated investigations that flow from it) will be concluded.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the audit on March 21, writing then that the company would “investigate all apps that had access to large amounts of information before we changed our platform to dramatically reduce data access in 2014, and we will conduct a full audit of any app with suspicious activity”.

But you do have to question how much the audit exercise is, first and foremost, intended to function as PR damage limitation for Facebook’s brand — given the company’s relaxed response to a data abuse report concerning a quiz app with ~120M monthly users, which it received right in the midst of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Because despite Facebook being alerted about the risk posed by the leaky quiz apps in late April — via its own data abuse bug bounty program — they were still live on its platform a month later.

It took about a further month for the vulnerability to be fixed.

And, sure, Facebook was certainly busy over that period. Busy dealing with a major privacy scandal.

Perhaps the company was putting rather more effort into pumping out a steady stream of crisis PR — including taking out full page newspaper adverts (where it wrote that: “we have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can’t, we don’t deserve it”) — vs actually ‘locking down the platform’, per its repeat claims, even though the company’s long and rich privacy-hostile history suggests otherwise.

Let’s also not forget that, in early April, Facebook quietly confessed to a major security flaw of its own — when it admitted that an account search and recovery feature had been abused by “malicious actors” who, over what must have been a period of several years, had been able to surreptitiously collect personal data on a majority of Facebook’s ~2BN users — and use that intel for whatever they fancied.

So Facebook users already have plenty reasons to doubt the company’s claims to be able to “protect your information”. But this latest data fail facepalm suggests it’s hardly scrambling to make amends for its own stinkingly bad legacy either.

Change will require regulation. And in Europe that has arrived, in the form of the GDPR.

Although it remains to be seen whether Facebook will face any data breach complaints in this specific instance, i.e. for not disclosing to affected users that their information was at risk of being exposed by the leaky quiz apps.

The regulation came into force on May 25 — and the javascript vulnerability was not fixed until June. So there may be grounds for concerned consumers to complain.

Which Facebook data abuse victim am I?

Writing in a Medium post, the security researcher who filed the report — self-styled “hacker” Inti De Ceukelaire — explains he went hunting for data abusers on Facebook’s platform after the company announced a data abuse bounty on April 10, as the company scrambled to present a responsible face to the world following revelations that a quiz app running on its platform had surreptitiously harvested millions of users’ data — data that had been passed to a controversial UK firm which intended to use it to target political ads at US voters.

De Ceukelaire says he began his search by noting down what third party apps his Facebook friends were using — finding quizzes were one of the most popular apps. Plus he already knew quizzes had a reputation for being data-suckers in a distracting wrapper. So he took his first ever Facebook quiz, from a brand called NameTests.com, and quickly realized the company was exposing Facebook users’ data to “any third-party that requested it”.

The issue was that NameTests was displaying the quiz taker’s personal data (such as full name, location, age, birthday) in a javascript file — thereby potentially exposing the identify and other data on logged in Facebook users to any external website they happened to visit.

He also found it was providing an access token that allowed it to grant even more expansive data access permissions to third party websites — such as to users’ Facebook posts, photos and friends.

It’s not clear exactly why — but presumably relates to the quiz app company’s own ad targeting activities. (Its privacy policy states: “We work together with various technological partners who, for example, display advertisements on the basis of user data. We make sure that the user’s data is pseudonymised (e.g. no clear data such as names or e-mail addresses) and that users have simple rights of revocation at their disposal. We also conclude special data protection agreements with our partners, in which they commit themselves to the protection of user data.” — which sounds great until you realize its javascript was just leaking people’s personally identified data… [facepalm])

“Depending on what quizzes you took, the javascript could leak your facebook ID, first name, last name, language, gender, date of birth, profile picture, cover photo, currency, devices you use, when your information was last updated, your posts and statuses, your photos and your friends,” writes De Ceukelaire.

He reckons people’s data had been being publicly exposed since at least the end of 2016.

On Facebook, NameTests describes its purpose thusly: “Our goal is simple: To make people smile!” — adding that its quizzes are intended as a bit of “fun”.

It doesn’t shout so loudly that the ‘price’ for taking one of its quizzes, say to find out what Disney princess you ‘are’, or what you could look like as an oil painting, is not only that it will suck out masses of your personal data (and potentially your friends’ data) from Facebook’s platform for its own ad targeting purposes but was also, until recently, that your and other people’s information could have been exposed to goodness knows who, for goodness knows what nefarious purposes… 

The Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data misuse scandal has underlined that ostensibly frivolous social data can end up being repurposed for all sorts of manipulative and power-grabbing purposes. (And not only can end up, but that quizzes are deliberately built to be data-harvesting tools… So think of that the next time you get a ‘take this quiz’ notification asking ‘what is in your fact file?’ or ‘what has your date of birth imprinted on you’? And hope ads is all you’re being targeted for… )

De Ceukelaire found that NameTests would still reveal Facebook users’ identity even after its app was deleted.

“In order to prevent this from happening, the user would have had to manually delete the cookies on their device, since NameTests.com does not offer a log out functionality,” he writes.

“I would imagine you wouldn’t want any website to know who you are, let alone steal your information or photos. Abusing this flaw, advertisers could have targeted (political) ads based on your Facebook posts and friends. More explicit websites could have abused this flaw to blackmail their visitors, threatening to leak your sneaky search history to your friends,” he adds, fleshing out the risks for affected Facebook users.

As well as alerting Facebook to the vulnerability, De Ceukelaire says he contacted NameTests — and they claimed to have found no evidence of abuse by a third party. They also said they would make changes to fix the issue.

We’ve reached out to NameTests’ parent company — a German firm called Social Sweethearts — for comment. Its website touts a “data-driven approach” — and claims its portfolio of products achieve “a global organic reach of several billion page views per month”.

After De Ceukelaire reported the problem to Facebook, he says he received an initial response from the company on April 30 saying they were looking into it. Then, hearing nothing for some weeks, he sent a follow up email, on May 14, asking whether they had contacted the app developers.

A week later Facebook replied saying it could take three to six months to investigate the issue (i.e. the same timeframe mentioned in their initial automated reply), adding they would keep him in the loop.

Yet at that time — which was a month after his original report — the leaky NameTests quizzes were still up and running,  meaning Facebook users’ data was still being exposed and at risk. And Facebook knew about the risk.

The next development came on June 25, when De Ceukelaire says he noticed NameTests had changed the way they process data to close down the access they had been exposing to third parties.

Two days later Facebook also confirmed the flaw in writing, admitting: “[T]his could have allowed an attacker to determine the details of a logged-in user to Facebook’s platform.”

It also told him it had confirmed with NameTests the issue had been fixed. And its apps continue to be available on Facebook’s platform — suggesting Facebook did not find the kind of suspicious activity that has led it to suspend other third party apps. (At least, assuming it conducted an investigation.)

Facebook paid out a $4,000 x2 bounty to a charity under the terms of its data abuse bug bounty program — and per De Ceukelaire’s request.

We asked it what took it so long to respond to the data abuse report, especially given the issue was so topical when De Ceukelaire filed the report. But Facebook declined to answer specific questions.

Instead it sent us the following statement, attributed to Ime Archibong, its VP of product partnerships:

A researcher brought the issue with the nametests.com website to our attention through our Data Abuse Bounty Program that we launched in April to encourage reports involving Facebook data. We worked with nametests.com to resolve the vulnerability on their website, which was completed in June.

Facebook also claims it received De Ceukelaire’s report on April 27, rather than April 22, as he recounts it. Though it’s possible the former date is when Facebook’s own staff retrieved the report from its systems. 

Beyond displaying a disturbingly relaxed attitude to other people’s privacy — which risks getting Facebook into regulatory trouble, given GDPR’s strict requirements around breach disclosure, for example — the other core issue of concern here is the company’s apparent failure to enforce its own developer policy. 

The underlying issue is whether or not Facebook performs any checks on apps running on its platform. It’s no good having T&Cs if you don’t have any active processes to enforce your T&Cs. Rules without enforcement aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.

Historical evidence suggests Facebook did not actively enforce its developer T&Cs — even if it’s now “locking down the platform”, as it claims, as a result of so many privacy scandals. 

The quiz app developer at the center of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Aleksandr Kogan — who harvested and sold/passed Facebook user data to third parties — has accused Facebook of essentially not having a policyHe contends it is therefore Facebook who is responsible for the massive data abuses that have played out on its platform — only a portion of which have so far come to light. 

Fresh examples such as NameTests’ leaky quiz apps merely bolster the case Kogan made for Facebook being the guilty party where data misuse is concerned. After all, if you built some stables without any doors at all would you really blame your horses for bolting?

How to Rotate the Windows Display by 90 Degrees (and Why You Should)


The Windows operating system allows you to rotate your entire screen by 90 degrees if you want to. But why would you want to?

This underused feature can be a handy way to get more out of your screen real estate with certain programs that lend themselves to portrait orientation.

This is, however, useful only if you can actually physically turn your screen by 90 degrees. So if you have a laptop with a screen that rotates, or you have an external monitor on a mount that allows rotation, this method will work wonders for you. It’s particularly useful if you have multiple external monitors.

How to Rotate the Orientation of a Windows Display

Whether or not you have multiple monitors set up on Windows 10, you can use this method:

  1. To change the orientation of your external display, right click anywhere on your desktop and click Display Settings. 
  2. In the Settings window that opens up, make sure you have the correct display selected. You can do this by selecting the numbered display you want to change and clicking Identify. (If you have only one external monitor you don’t have to worry about this step.) 
  3. When you’re sure you have the correct display selected, scroll down to Scale and layout and under Orientation select Portrait from the dropdown menu.  
  4. Your monitor should now be displaying in the portrait mode. Click Keep changes to maintain the portrait mode.

When Does Orientation Rotation Come in Handy?

If you have two external displays, there may be certain programs you always keep open in one of those displays. Here are a couple of examples of when you might get more out of using portrait mode:

  • When using Outlook, or any other email client, changing the orientation to portrait mode allows you to see far more items in your inbox than with the traditional landscape mode.
  • If you’re designing a lengthy infographic using a program like Photoshop or Illustrator, turning your screen 90 degrees, allows you to see more of the entire design in one go. (You can keep reference material open on the other screen.)

Anytime you need a more lengthy screen, this little trick can get you just that—and this is just one of the many ways having dual monitors can make you more productive.

Google Calendar gets an ‘Out of Office’ mode


Google Calendar is the latest Google app to get an update focused on improving users’ “digital wellbeing.” The company announced today it’s rolling out a new “Out of Office” feature in Google Calendar, alongside a setting for customizable working hours. The working hours signal to others when you’re unavailable, and allows Google Calendar to automatically decline meetings on your behalf outside those hours.

For starters, you’ll find there’s a new “Out of Office” calendar entry type you can select when you’re creating an event via Google Calendar on the web.

For example, if you’re scheduling the dates of your vacation, you could mark that event as “Out of Office.” If others send you meeting invites during this period, Google Calendar will decline them without your involvement.

It’s a feature users have requested for years to complement Gmail’s Vacation Responder.

Google also says it will attempt to automatically detect when event types should be denoted “Out of Office,” based on the event title.

 

Another new feature will allow you to better customize your working hours in Google Calendar.

Currently, you can set working hours to one interval for all days of the week, but now you’ll be able to customize your hours for each day separately. This will help people who have irregular availability – not the usual 9 to 5, so to speak.

Google Calendar will also try to infer your working hours based on your prior scheduling patterns, and may prompt you to confirm them in the app’s Settings.

The changes, while seemingly small, are part of a broader movement at Google to promote digital wellbeing across its platforms.

In recent months, the company has introduced a number of features focused on helping people better manage their time, and fight back against the addictive nature of smartphones and digital services.

For example, Google introduced new time management controls for Android users at its I/O developer conference in May, and it has a set of screen time tools for parents to use with children via Family Link.

It even rolled out new tools to help YouTube users cut down the time they spend mindlessly watching videos.

Other services, like Gmail and Google Photos, utilize machine learning and A.I. to reduce the time spent in-app, by doing things like prioritizing the important mail, or automatically editing your photos.

The new Google Calendar tools are rolling out now to G Suite users, Google says. Presumably, a broader consumer release will soon follow.

3 Ways to Recover Deleted Photos on Any Android Device

Self-Supervised Tracking via Video Colorization




Tracking objects in video is a fundamental problem in computer vision, essential to applications such as activity recognition, object interaction, or video stylization. However, teaching a machine to visually track objects is challenging partly because it requires large, labeled tracking datasets for training, which are impractical to annotate at scale.

In “Tracking Emerges by Colorizing Videos”, we introduce a convolutional network that colorizes grayscale videos, but is constrained to copy colors from a single reference frame. In doing so, the network learns to visually track objects automatically without supervision. Importantly, although the model was never trained explicitly for tracking, it can follow multiple objects, track through occlusions, and remain robust over deformations without requiring any labeled training data.
Example tracking predictions on the publicly-available, academic dataset DAVIS 2017. After learning to colorize videos, a mechanism for tracking automatically emerges without supervision. We specify regions of interest (indicated by different colors) in the first frame, and our model propagates it forward without any additional learning or supervision.

Learning to Recolorize Video
Our hypothesis is that the temporal coherency of color provides excellent large-scale training data for teaching machines to track regions in video. Clearly, there are exceptions when color is not temporally coherent (such as lights turning on suddenly), but in general color is stable over time. Furthermore, most videos contain color, providing a scalable self-supervised learning signal. We decolor videos, and then add the colorization step because there may be multiple objects with the same color, but by colorizing we can teach machines to track specific objects or regions.

In order to train our system, we use videos from the Kinetics dataset, which is a large public collection of videos depicting everyday activities. We convert all video frames except the first frame into gray-scale, and train a convolutional network to predict the original colors in the subsequent frames. We expect the model to learn to follow regions in order to accurately recover the original colors. Our main observation is the need to follow objects for colorization will cause a model for object tracking to be automatically learned.
We illustrate the video recolorization task using video from the DAVIS 2017 dataset. The model receives as input one color frame and a gray-scale video, and predicts the colors for the rest of the video. The model learns to copy colors from the reference frame, which enables a mechanism for tracking to be learned without human supervision.
Learning to copy colors from the single reference frame requires the model to learn to internally point to the right region in order to copy the right colors. This forces the model to learn an explicit mechanism that we can use for tracking. To see how the video colorization model works, we show some predicted colorizations from videos in the Kinetics dataset below.

Although the network is trained without ground-truth identities, our model learns to track any visual region specified in the first frame of a video. We can track outlined objects or a single point in the video. The only change we make is that, instead of propagating colors throughout the video, we now propagate labels representing the regions of interest.

Analyzing the Tracker
Since the model is trained on large amounts of unlabeled video, we want to gain insight into what the model learns. The videos below show a standard trick to visualize the embeddings learned by our model by projecting them down to three dimensions using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and plotting it as an RGB movie. The results show that nearest neighbors in the learned embedding space tend to correspond to object identity, even over deformations and viewpoint changes.

Tracking Pose
We found the model can also track human poses given key-points in an initial frame. We show results on the publicly-available, academic dataset JHMDB where we track a human joint skeleton.
Examples of using the model to track movements of the human skeleton. In this case the input was a human pose for the first frame and subsequent movement is automatically tracked. The model can track human poses even though it was never explicitly trained for this task.

While we do not yet outperform heavily supervised models, the colorization model learns to track video segments and human pose well enough to outperform the latest methods based on optical flow. Breaking down performance by motion type suggests that our model is a more robust tracker than optical flow for many natural complexities, such as dynamic backgrounds, fast motion, and occlusions. Future Work
Our results show that video colorization provides a signal that can be used for learning to track objects in videos without supervision. Moreover, we found that the failures from our system are correlated with failures to colorize the video, which suggests that further improving the video colorization model can advance progress in self-supervised tracking.
