In big tech’s future expansion plans, public good should be the corporate incentive

The cancellation of Amazon’s planned expansion in New York exposes the truth about its HQ2 promises. In the end, the company seemed mainly interested in tax incentives and being allowed to make a corner of NYC once set aside for public housing and schools its own.

Meanwhile, Arlington county officials are revisiting plans to deliver locally-funded financial incentives to Amazon in exchange for the development of DC-adjacent “National Landing.”

Increasingly, communities are demanding that tech companies bring more to the table than they take. Locals want them to stimulate the local economy and fortify startup ecosystems rather than hire away people and raise housing prices. After all, talent is the most precious resource in the digital economy, and if cities nourish it, the tech firms will come naturally.

There’s plenty to dislike about the way Amazon approached its HQ2 search. Encouraging cities to throw sweeteners at a multinational run by the world’s richest man was spectacularly tone deaf at a time of growing anxiety about inequality. But there is an upside: the HQ2 experiment can still serve as a watershed moment that brings into focus the need for greater corporate responsibility with big tech expansions.

Toronto was one of only two HQ2 bid “finalists” – along with Austin, Texas – that did not offer any tax incentives to Amazon leading up to the reveal. The reasoning by the city’s bid leader, Toronto Global CEO Toby Lennox, was simple: Toronto should win Amazon’s presence, job creation potential and global connectivity thanks to the city’s well-educated and culturally diverse workforce, connected economy and excellent quality of life.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the HQ2 bid was not widely embraced by Toronto’s ecosystem. Subsidies aside, startup CEOs worried that the presence of Amazon might come at the expense of local companies already fighting for top engineers. Amazon offered little in return to the community – upskilling and expanding the talent pool was not part of its playbook.

It’s notable that in Virginia, where the other half of Amazon’s HQ2 has faced less controversy than New York, the state’s incentive package included investing $1.1 billion in its higher education system to build its talent pipeline. That creates benefits for everyone, not just Amazon.

Amazon’s move will, I suspect, come to be seen as the high-water mark for Big Tech hubris. There are enormous benefits to a city in attracting major tech firms – the name-recognition alone acts as a signal to investors and engineers that interesting things are happening there. But, in the future, I believe we will see far fewer attempts to create vast corporate campuses with helipads, and more effort to integrate into the existing ecosystem.

Apple iPad event

Apple and Google are both expanding in New York without a similar backlash because their plans are smaller scale and seen to complement the city rather than ignore it.

Last fall, when Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced plans to build a new engineering center in Toronto, he stressed the importance of ramping up operations responsibly. He underscored that the company will pace its hiring and staff relocation to avoid stifling the ecosystem of artificial intelligence startups and researchers that had attracted Uber to the city in the first place.

Investments in local economies – like Microsoft’s recent $500 million promise to deliver more affordable housing in Seattle – are also going to become increasingly important for Big Tech companies if they want to retain public support.

There are lessons here for both civic leaders and tech executives. It’s easy to see why cities jump at the chance of bringing in tens of thousands of jobs, but that has to be balanced against the interests of the city’s homegrown tech companies and existing communities.

Tech companies need to accept that their social license to operate is being called into question as never before and that they need to put more emphasis on public engagement, job creation for local people and infrastructure improvements in their future plans. The aim should be for new players to grow local economies that benefit every stakeholder – not arrive with a splash that destabilizes the communities we need to build.

Amazon and its fellow tech giants must embrace that public good is the best corporate incentive.

Failing at Big Goals? These 100 Days Projects Might Motivate You Again

100 Days Projects

Big goals can numb you. If you are hiccupping towards your big goals, then there’s some hope. But if those ambitions are lying comatose on some paper somewhere, then it’s time for a rethink.

That’s why behavioral experts recommend setting short goals. Thus the idea of 100 Days Projects emerged from the ashes of many failed intentions. Hundred days is neither too far nor too short for pulling off a challenge. It’s the low hanging fruit.

These five 100 Days Projects are just a few examples that might help you create your own challenge or find a community to do it with.

1. The100DayProject: A Global Art Project You Can Jump Into

Create anything in 100 days.

Pick an art project on anything you can think of. Commit to 100 days of making and sharing your progress on Instagram. The100DayProject starts on April 2nd, 2019. In all the years since 2014, it has been a success too. The creativity sparker was started by Elle Luna (of The Great Discontent) and a group of friends.

The 100 days you spend on this project give you ample scope to stretch your creativity. You can choose anything for your own creativity test tube. You can paint, draw, dance, knit, doodle, sing, write a book, or even brush your teeth! But you have to do it till July 10th.

The site gives you both inspiration and structure. But it applies no restrictions. Sign up for the newsletter and open your inbox in the morning. As the site says, a good project is something you should want to do at least for 5-10 minutes every day if not more. Just make it easy and fun!

2. 100Days of Code: Turn Coding Into a Daily Habit

Turn coding into a daily habit.

We are a tech site, so it’s natural to swing back to topics like programming once we are done with other creative challenges. The 100 Days of Code is an always challenge to help you commit to a coding habit. You have to publicly commit to the challenge on Twitter and then start coding for a minimum of an hour every day for the next 100 days.

Feel alone? Connect to others with the #100DaysOfCode on Twitter or go to the site’s Connect page for the other routes.

The challenge does not restrict you to any coding languages. But let’s assume you are a beginner who wants to learn the ropes. The site recommends that you follow FreeCodeCamp’s Front End Curriculum.

Hundred days is a tiny step to building a coding habit, but it is an important one to carry on beyond that milestone. It could also help you regain your lost motivation for programming.

3. 100 Days of Swift: Learn One of The Most Popular Coding Languages

Learn one of the most popular coding languages

The TIOBE index places Swift outside the Top 10 rankings. But that doesn’t mean it is unpopular. It is just four years old and connected to Apple’s survival as it keeps developing apps for iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and Linux for a mobile world. Numerous coding courses are launched across the world often.

The 100 Days of Swift is a free collection of videos, tutorials, tests compiled by Paul Hudson who is the creator of Hacking With Swift book. The freebies are the resources that came out from his work on the book.

As he says, the 100 days course is aimed squarely at beginners who want to learn to build real iOS apps, but struggle to find a good, free course that can help them achieve their goals. The days are neatly organized with specific assignments. You have to do just two things:

  • Spend one hour every day reading or watching Swift tutorials, or writing Swift code.
  • Post about your progress to the social media site of your choosing and announce your achievement.

If you still have doubts about starting this marathon, remember that Swift is worth learning for the immediate future.

4. 100 Days Without Fear: Stop Living in Fear

Michelle Poler is a great example of how any life project can propel you towards success. Or how it can eliminate those little bad habits that hold all of us back. The site isn’t a call for an “open challenge” but it can serve as a template to start your own on anything that helps break the straitjacket.

It’s an inspiring journey through Michelle’s big fears. It started off by accepting the challenge, covering mundane stuff like living without a cellphone for a day, and ending at giving the public TED Talk you can see above.

She ultimately turned her journey into a public speaking career. So you can make a dent in some area of your life too. Join the movement by clicking the bright yellow button on the site. Also, check out other inspirational stories on Hello Fears.

5. The Freedom Journal (Android, iOS): Do it in Micro Sprints

The Freedom Journal

You have your goal set. But you need an accountability tool to help you stay on track. The Freedom Journal is a well-structured hardcover journal supported by the companion apps that gives you the place to set, track, and review your goal. Ideally, you should set one goal and accomplish it in 100 days or less.

There are already other journals out there and you can make your own too. The Freedom Journal wants you to focus on one major goal for 100 days. It breaks down the hairy goal into smaller ten-day micro-sprints followed by quarterly reviews. Every day you are supported with instructions and an inspirational quote.

The Freedom Journal was created by John Lee Dumas with entrepreneurs in mind. But it can be used by anyone. You can buy the hardcover version from the site. Or you can take a glimpse with this free 30-Day PDF. I will suggest that you try the mobile apps first and see if the structure suits you.

Day Zero Is Today

A single project for a hundred days is a simple idea that requires just one simple thing—a commitment for some minutes of your day, every day. The benefits can be life-changing. You just might find your passion in something you thought you couldn’t do. It might help you build a portfolio of interesting work. It will take you out of your comfort zone!

But if you think that one-third of a year is a bit too much, then test the waters with these ideas for 30-Day projects instead.

Apple Quietly Announces New 2019 iPad Air and iPad Mini

More often than not, when Apple has something new to announce, there’s quite a bit of fanfare. There’s usually news releases announcing that there’s going to be an announcement. And once it’s time for the news to drop, there’s normally a conference with reporters from around the world in attendance waiting to see what the Cupertino-based company is going to proclaim next.

Today was a little different, though, as Apple refreshed its iPad Air and iPad Mini with a simple announcement on its website.

New 10.5-Inch iPad Air

Starting with the larger, and thus more expensive, iPad Air, Apple has made some pretty solid changes from the previous version, though the company isn’t reinventing the wheel. First, and most obvious, is the size of the device. Previous versions of the iPad Air came with a 9.7-inch display. Now, Apple has given the device a 10.5-inch screen, which is a nice change.

Internally, the new iPad Air comes with Apple’s A12 Bionic CPU.

In terms of features, it remains mostly the same as the previous model with Touch ID, a Lightning port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. However, Apple has added support for the Apple Pencil, putting the device more in line with the 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

In terms of cameras, there’s an 8 MP rear camera and a 7 MP selfie camera on the front of the tablet. The screen is a Retina display, toting a resolution of 2224 X 1668.

In terms of price, the new iPad Air falls in the middle of Apple’s tablet range, coming with a starting price of $499 for the 64GB Wi-Fi only version. Buyers looking for cellular capabilities will need to fork over quite a bit more, as that model starts at $629. Buyers can upgrade the storage up to 256GB.

New 7.9-Inch iPad Mini

As for the new iPad Mini, the screen is 7.9-inches, making it comparable in size to the older tablets in the line. That screen features a 2048 X 1536 resolution, which equates to an impressive pixel density of 326ppi.

The other features are actually the same as the new iPad Air—it has Touch ID, a Lightning port, and a 3.5-mm headphone jack. It’s powered by the same A12 Bionic chip and it even comes equipped with the same cameras as the larger tablet. There’s also support for the Apple Pencil.

Obviously, the price is the main place the new iPad Mini differs from the iPad Air. The 64GB version sells for $399 with just Wi-Fi and for $529 with Wi-Fi and cellular.

Both models are available right now from Apple’s website, but if you really want a beast of a tablet, check out our review of the iPad Pro.

This Chrome Extension Lets You Hide Toxic Comments

Tune is a new experimental Chrome extension which lets you control the comments you see online. If you’re sick of seeing vile and vitriolic comments sections you can make them disappear altogether. Or you can set the volume anywhere between “Quiet” and “Loud”.

Tune has been developed by Jigsaw, a subsidiary of Alphabet. Tune leverages Perspective, which “uses machine learning to spot abusive language”. Because online comments aren’t generally filled with people expressing love for their fellow human beings.

Remove the Toxicity From Online Comments

Tune enables you to set the level of toxicity you’re comfortable with. Which is the key when people have different tolerance levels for attacks, insults, and profanity. And those people who have really had enough can remove the comments altogether.

Once installed, you turn a dial to change the volume of the comments you can see. Turning the dial right down hides all comments. While turning it all the way up allows everything through, no matter how toxic it may be. You can also pitch it somewhere in the middle.

Tune currently works on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Disqus, but could be expanded to other platforms over time. However, Jigsaw has clearly chosen those platforms for a reason, as all have been known to have problems with toxicity in the past.

Jigsaw is keen to point out that Tune is experimental, which means it “still misses some toxic comments and incorrectly hides some non-toxic comments”. However, Tune is open source and available on Github, which means you can get involved in its development.

Download: Tune for Chrome

Tune Gives the Power Back to Individuals

Platforms can and should be doing more to police conversations that cross the line into illegality. But that does nothing to remove toxic comments that don’t break community guidelines. Tune gives the power back to individual users.

It should be noted that Tune cannot combat the targeted harassment of individuals, which is another issue altogether. However, by helping make the most toxic comments less visible, Tune could help deter the trolls who get a kick out of ruining someone’s day.

Nvidia’s T4 GPUs are coming to the AWS cloud

In the coming weeks, AWS is launching new G4 instances with support for Nvidia’s T4 Tensor Core GPUs, the company today announced at Nvidia’s GTC conference. The T4, which is based on Nvidia’s Turing architecture, was specifically optimized for running AI models. The T4 will be supported by the EC2 compute service and the Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes.

“NVIDIA and AWS have worked together for a long time to help customers run compute-intensive AI workloads in the cloud and create incredible new AI solutions,” said Matt Garman, vice president of Compute Services at AWS, in today’s announcement. “With our new T4-based G4 instances, we’re making it even easier and more cost-effective for customers to accelerate their machine learning inference and graphics-intensive applications.”

The T4 is also the first GPU on AWS that supports Nvidia’s raytracing technology. That’s not what Nvidia is focusing on with this announcement, but creative pros can use these GPUs to take the company’s real-time raytracing technology for a spin.

For the most part, though, it seems like Nvidia and AWS expect that developers will use the T4 to put AI models into production. It’s worth noting that the T4 hasn’t been optimized for training these models, but they can obviously be used for that as well. Indeed, with the new Cuda-X AI libraries (also announced today), Nvidia now offers an end-to-end platform for developers who want to use its GPUs fr deep learning, machine learning and data analytics.

It’s worth noting that Google launched T4 support in beta a few months ago. On Google’s cloud, these GPUs are currently in beta.

Intel and Cray are building a $500 million ‘exascale’ supercomputer for Argonne National Lab

In a way, I have the equivalent of a supercomputer in my pocket. But in another, more important way, that pocket computer is a joke compared with real supercomputers — and Intel and Cray are putting together one of the biggest ever with a half-billion-dollar contract from the Department of Energy. It’s going to do exaflops!

The “Aurora” program aims to put together an “exascale” computing system for Argonne National Laboratory by 2021. The “exa” is prefix indicating bigness, in this case 1 quintillion floating point operations, or FLOPs. They’re kind of the horsepower rating of supercomputers.

For comparison, your average modern CPU does maybe a hundred or more gigaflops. A thousand gigaflops makes a teraflop, a thousand teraflops makes a petaflop, and a thousand petaflops makes an exaflop. So despite major advances in computing efficiency going into making super powerful smartphones and desktops, we’re talking several orders of magnitude difference. (Let’s not get into GPUs, it’s complicated.)

And even when compared with the biggest supercomputers and clusters out there, you’re still looking at a max of 200 petaflops (that would be IBM’s Summit, over at Oak Ridge National Lab) or thereabouts.

Just what do you need that kind of computing power for? Petaflops wouldn’t do it? Well, no, actually. One very recent example of computing limitations in real-world research was this study of how climate change could affect cloud formation in certain regions, reinforcing the trend and leading to a vicious cycle.

This kind of thing could only be estimated with much coarser models before; Computing resources were too tight to allow for the kind of extremely large number of variables involved here (or here — more clouds). Imagine simulating a ball bouncing on the ground — easy — now imagine simulating every molecule in that ball, their relationships to each other, gravity, air pressure, other forces — hard. Now imagine simulating two stars colliding.

The more computing resources we have, the more can be dedicated to, as the Intel press release offers as examples, “developing extreme-scale cosmological simulations, discovering new approaches for drug response prediction and discovering materials for the creation of more efficient organic solar cells.”

Intel says that Aurora will be the first exaflop system in the U.S. — an important caveat, since China is aiming to accomplish the task a year earlier. There’s no reason to think they won’t achieve it, either, since Chinese supercomputers have reliably been among the fastest in the world.

If you’re curious what ANL may be putting its soon-to-be-built computers to work for, feel free to browse its research index. The short answer is “just about everything.”

Apple Business Chat drives in-seat drink ordering at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland

misterb&b hits the equity crowdfunding trail to expand into hotels

Homosexuality is illegal in a third of the planet, and in eight countries, it is punishable by death. In the febrile atmosphere of today’s politics, hate crime incidents in the US increased by 17% between 2016 to 2017, according to the FBI.

Over 20 of those incidents were crimes against an individual’s sexual-orientation — the largest increase since 9/11. Similar hate crime statistics have increased in the UK and several other western countries.

It’s strange and saddening to think that men, women, and gender non-conforming people who “travel while gay” are now in a more dangerous – and potentially life-threatening – situation around the world, despite us being well into the 21st Century.

The key to the situation is knowing whether the place you’re staying at will be welcoming or not. There are many incidents where, at hotels, gay travelers have been rejected or forced to book separate rooms, and had to fall back on third-party, unverified, user-generated reviews.

Now, misterb&b, the short-term rental marketplace aimed at the Gay community, has a simple solution. Customers can book an entire home or rent a private room at the home of a gay or gay-friendly host, and with many located in gay-friendly neighborhoods. The startup competes with more home-spun sites like “Gay Home Stays“, however, misterb&b has already raised substantial amounts in VC.

The startup graduated from the 500 Startups accelerator and has raised US$13.5M from institutional investors like Project A and Ventech, and from angels like Joel Simkhai (founder of Grindr, which sold for $300M USD). The marketplace now has 310,000 hosts in over 135 countries, and claims to have 30% revenue growth YoY; with 60% of the business done organically by repeat customers.

misterb&b has now raised over half a million dollars inside a week via Wefunder to fund its expansion. This will allow guests, hosts, and the public to invest in the company’s push to launch its services into the hotel sector.

Investors are buying into a lucrative market. The niche of global gay tourism is estimated to be a $100Bn market, while gay people travel twice as much as other travelers. Its fund-raising may also benefit from the influx of new tech millionaires being created by the upcoming IPOs of Uber, Lyft, Postmates, and Airbnb.

CEO and founder Matthieu Jost says he wants to “build equality into the sharing economy and give back to a community that’s been historically economically marginalized,” providing its community “with the power of part ownership of the company”.

The idea for starting misterb&b was first conceived in 2013 after he had a negative experience while traveling with his partner and didn’t feel welcome by his host. “Six years ago, my partner and I traveled to and booked a room in Barcelona through a third party rental website,” he told me via email.

“Unfortunately, when we arrived there, we were faced with a host who was very much homophobic and asked me if we were seriously going to share a bedroom. This was a very sad thing to have to face. Straight, hetero folks never have to worry about something so humiliating as this while on a lovely vacation; they will never have to think about it or prepare for it.”

“When I returned home I felt dejected, but I felt I had do something to solve this horrific problem – yet common fear – that our community faces. I don’t want my community to be afraid of traveling anymore,” he said.

“We are reaching out to the most passionate people in the community: our hosts and our guests, as well as LGBTQ allies,” said Jost. “We want to provide the opportunity to financially benefit from our successes,” he added.

The crowdfunding is for a new selection of gay-friendly and gay-welcoming hotels that have been selected by the company’s editorial team for their quality, exclusive, and verified reviews from LGBTQ travelers. The idea is that travelers will also be able to connect with each other to explore the city together – especially because there’s safety in numbers.

4 Ways to Tell If Someone Was Snooping on Your PC

You can take precautions against others using your PC, but sometimes, you don’t think it’s necessary. You can trust your family and friends. And the people you work with won’t snoop on your online activities.

Yet things aren’t right. Your laptop isn’t where you left. Your desk is a mess.

Has someone secretly used your PC? What have they been looking at? Nearly everything you do leaves some kind of trace on a computer. You just need to know where to go in order to find that evidence.

Knowing where to start can drastically reduce the amount of time it takes to find the culprit. Here’s how you can tell if someone logged into your computer without your permission.

1. Check Recent Activities

Microsoft Office recent files

You should already know how to look at recently opened files. Windows introduced this as an easy way to go back to whatever you’ve been working on or looking at. It’s especially handy if you’re adding an attachment to an email or uploading to a blog. But you can also use this feature to check if someone else has been accessing your files.

Just head to the File Explorer by either opening Documents, This PC, or pressing Windows key + E. At the top left of the menu, click on Quick access. You’ll be able to see what’s been opened, so look for anything you haven’t accessed yourself.

Alternatively, you can check files opened in individual apps. If you think someone’s snooped on a PowerPoint presentation you made, check Recent in that program.

2. Check Recently Modified Files

However, anyone can wipe recent activity from your machine. Just left click on Quick access > Options > Clear File Explorer History. If your recent activity has been deleted, this is at least a sign that someone has used your PC. But how can you tell what folders they’ve opened?

Navigate back to File Explorer then type “datemodified:” into the search field at the top right. You can refine by a date range. It’s probably most useful if you click on Today, but you can go back a whole year too.

You’ll see a list of files that have been accessed—as long as something was changed. Let’s hope you’re lucky enough that your PC automatically saved an item while the snooper was at work. Check the times listed and narrow down when you were away from your device.

3. Check Your Browser History

Okay, everyone knows you can easily delete your browsing history. But if someone used your PC in a hurry, they might’ve forgotten this step.

Google Chrome has the biggest market share, so it’s most likely that whoever went on your computer used that. Click on the vertical ellipsis in the top right corner then History and see if anything’s amiss.

Don’t rule out other browsers though. If your PC has Edge, go to the ellipsis then Favorites > History. You can use a similar method if you still have Internet Explorer installed. Firefox users should click on the menu, followed by History > Show All History.

4. Check Windows 10 Logon Events

You want to know if someone else has accessed your PC, but the simple methods are yet to bear fruit. Fortunately, you can delve deeper into your computer for further evidence.

Windows 10 Home automatically audits logon events—meaning it takes a note of every time you log into your device. So how can you check it? And once you’ve found the log, how can you interpret any meaning from it?

Windows Logs for logon audits

Search for Event Viewer and click on the app. Go to Windows Log > Security. You’ll see a long list of activities, most of which won’t make much sense to you unless you know Windows ID codes well.

Event Viewer Windows 10 shows logon audits

The one you need to look out for is “4624”, which records as a “Logon”. “4672” means “Special Logon”, which you might see in conjunction with a standard logon. This indicates an administrative login. “4634” will be listed when an account logs off your PC.

Logon Windows 10 Log Security

It might be difficult to spot these codes, but you can narrow it down by using the Find… feature in the Actions menu to the right.

If you know a time you were away from your computer, you can either scroll through the log or use Filters. Go to Actions > Filter Current Log then use the dropdown menu under Logged.

Click on any individual log to find out more details, including which account signed in. This is useful if you think someone has used your PC but not your system.

How to Enable Logon Auditing on Windows 10 Pro

The Home version of Windows 10 audits logons by default. However, the Pro version could require some tinkering.

Access the Group Policy Editor by searching for “gpedit”. Next, go to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Audit Policy > Logon Audits. You need to select Success and Failure in order for it to register successful and unsuccessful login attempts.

After you’ve done this, you can check the audits for future reference by using the aforementioned method via Event Viewer.

How to Stop Others Using Your Computer

How can you stop others accessing your PC? Firstly, you can ask. You might be questioned about why it bothers you, but if it’s your own property, it’s your right.

The most important thing is to create a strong password for your account. Make sure it’s not predictable. Don’t write it down anywhere. And whenever you leave your desk, press Windows key + L. It’s one of the best ways to lock your PC and make certain no one can snoop on your activities.

The Top 5 Free Apps to Split or Merge Video Files

video-editing

Editing videos can be surprisingly complex. Using a serious tool like Adobe Premiere Pro, it could take days to comfortably cut your first video into smaller clips, or put videos together into a single larger clip.

What are you to do when you don’t have that kind of time? What if you just want to merge videos together one time and don’t want to install a full-blown video editor like Final Cut X or HitFilm Express?

Don’t worry, you have options! There are many free tools for splitting and merging video files—the tricky part is finding the ones worth using. Learn how to merge videos together (or split videos apart) using these best apps for merging and splitting videos.

1. MP4Tools

MP4Tools is an open-source project that consists of two utilities, making it a free video merger and free video splitter in one.

MP4Splitter is for splitting an MP4 video file into multiple pieces:

split merge videos mp4splitter

MP4Joiner is for merging MP4 video files together:

split merge videos mp4joiner

No other video types are supported, but seeing as how MP4 is the most popular video format, that’s not a huge problem.

Actually, it’s a benefit! MP4Tools can split and merge MP4 videos without re-encoding. Re-encoding takes time and often results in a loss of quality, which is why MP4Tools can do instant cutting and joining at source quality. This is why it’s our favorite free video merger app. However, you can force re-encoding if you’d like.

Splitting is as easy as loading a video file, adding “split points,” then clicking Start splitting. Merging is even easier: add the individual video files, then click Join.

2. Machete Video Editor

As far as lightweight video merger and editor apps are concerned, Machete Video Editor is one of the best. As long as you output videos with the same settings as your source videos, it will not re-encode.

The downside to the Lite version of Machete is that it only works with AVI and WMV formats. To unlock FLV, MP4, MKV, MOV, and several additional audio formats, you’ll need to purchase the full version. This is the only limitation of the Lite version.

split merge videos machete

To split a video, click Play > Jump to time… and navigate to a starting timestamp, then click the Set the beginning of a selection button. Navigate to an ending timestamp and click Set the end of a selection. Then click Save the selection as… to export the clip.

To merge videos, load the first clip (it can be any, doesn’t have to be the first in order). Use Play > Jump to time… to navigate to where you want to insert the next clip, then click Edit > Insert a file at the current position… Repeat for all clips, then File > Save As… to finish.

3. Format Factory

I hesitate to recommend Format Factory because it requires over 150 MB to install—a hefty amount of space if all you want to do is split and merge video clips. But if you also need to convert between formats and/or rip from CDs and DVDs, then it may be worth your while.

split merge videos format factory

To split a video, click the output format you want in the sidebar, then click Add File and load the video. Click Option, set the Start Time and End Time to wherever you want the split, then click OK. Lastly, click Start to begin the splitting task.

To merge videos, go to Utilities > Video Joiner in the sidebar. Set the proper Output Setting, then click Add File to load all of the individual clips. Lastly, once everything is ordered properly, click OK and then Start to begin the merging task.

Note: You may see an “Unsafe Website!” warning for Format Factory claiming that it distributes spyware/malware. As long as you uncheck the bundleware during installation, it’s fine. That said, use at your own risk!

4. Avidemux

While Avidemux is technically a video editor, it has nowhere near the same complexity as a professional video workstation. It’s simple enough that you only have to click a few buttons to do what you want, especially if you only need to split and merge videos.

Avidemux supports AVI, FLV, MP4, MPG, and MKV formats, which covers about 99 percent of all modern videos. Furthermore, Avidemux won’t re-encode if your output settings are the exact same as the input, thus saving time and preserving video quality.

To split a video, load it and click Time at the bottom, set the starting timestamp of the split, then click the Set start marker button. Next, navigate to the ending timestamp of the split, then click Set end marker. Lastly, click File > Save to save everything between markers as a clip.

To join videos, load the first clip with File > Open, then load subsequent clips with File > Append. You must do it in the order you want them merged! Save the combined video with File > Save.

5. Freemake Video Converter

Freemake Video Converter supports over 500 video and audio formats and is easy to use, but the free version adds a watermark. For $9 per year (or $19 lifetime payment), the watermarking is removed and video conversions are even faster. Unfortunately, splitting and merging always re-encodes.

To split a video, load it with the +Video button, then click to edit. Use the playback timeline and the Start Selection and Selection End buttons (under the Cutting section) to select a timeframe. When finished, click OK and then one of the output buttons at the bottom to export.

To merge videos, add as many clips as you want with +Video, and then enable the Join files toggle at the top right. Drag and drop to sequence the clips, then click one of the output buttons at the bottom to export.

Going forward, you should also learn how to reduce video file sizes without sacrificing quality, which comes in handy when doing all kinds of video editing. Also, don’t miss out on the nuances of video codecs, containers, and compression!

Turn Microsoft Excel Into a Tax Calculator With These Templates

The tax season is well and truly upon us. It is time to count the pennies and disclose exactly how much you made, as well as how you earned it.

Calculating the right amount of tax is essential. It can also be difficult. With that in mind, I’ve tracked down three Microsoft Excel tax calculators to ensure you don’t miss a single penny.

I’ve made every effort to ensure these tax calculators work as they should—and they do—but your taxes are your responsibility. These tax template spreadsheets just help you on the way.

1. Gleen Reeves’ Excel1040

Let’s start with one of the most comprehensive calculators. Tax calculator creator Glenn Reeves has been updating and distributing his custom Excel template for well over a decade—always for free.

Reeves meticulously updates the template for each tax year, including all recent changes. Furthermore, Reeves keeps an up-to-date changes list, so you know exactly where the template has changed.

excel gleen reeves tax calc instructions

It is comprehensive. Reeves’ tax calculator spreadsheet includes all the forms you would expect, such as your W-2s, 1099-R, SSA-1099, and 1040. Also, Reeves has developed separate worksheets for almost every calculation, as well as including the numerous tax schedules.

You can see why Reeves’ meticulous planning and template structure win so many plaudits!

As you would expect, Reeves protects the workbook sheets to prevent unwanted changes. You can unlock the sheets and tinker if you wish, but this could result in an inaccurate tax return. I would suggest leaving the document protection in place—at least until you’ve made your tax calculations.

The spreadsheet essentially walks you through your federal income tax calculation which, let’s face it, can be a literal nightmare.

Finally, Reeves’ develops and maintains his amazing tax calculator spreadsheet for free. He does accept donations for his time, though. Reeves’ says they “feed his ego” and encourage him to continue the labor of love each year. You can take comfort in the knowledge that Reeves’ reports all of his donations and even donates some to his local church.

To use Glenn Reeves’ tax calculator, head to the Spreadsheet Download page, download the relevant year, and fire it up in Excel.

2. Taxvisor Income Tax Planning Spreadsheets

Taxvisor produces a tax calculator every year and has done so since the 1990s. The Taxvisor Income Tax Planning Spreadsheets come with an installer, which is slightly odd.

However, after first installing the Taxvisor executable in a virtual machine, I can confirm it is legitimate and will cause your system no harm.

excel taxvisor income tax spreadsheet installer

Taxvisor has four worksheets: Single Filing, Joint Filing, Married Separate Filing, and Head of Household Filing. The four sheets all feature a list of Federal tax parameters specific to each tax return.

Taxvisor also features a handy legend detailing your income, taxes owed, remaining taxes owed, and of course, your tax summary information. Like Excel1040, Taxvisor’s worksheets are protected to stop unregulated tinkering that could lead to an inaccurate return.

excel taxvisor income tax spreadsheet

Overall, Taxvisor is easy to use. It doesn’t offer the massive range of additional worksheets and tax schedules included with Excel1040, but the simpler, much cleaner design aids focus. Likewise, there may not be super detailed instructions, but each input has a minute tool-tip quickly detailing what the box use is. But don’t let the simplistic approach fool you. Taxvisor is still a fully featured tax calculator.

Important Note: When you are installing Taxvisor, the default file path is C:/My Documents but Windows 10 doesn’t use “My Documents” anymore, it’s just “Documents.”

3. Make Your Own Federal Income Tax Spreadsheet

You always have the option of creating a personal federal income tax calculator spreadsheet. First, there are a few Excel formulas to learn:

  • VLOOKUP
  • IF
  • ISPMT
  • EFFECT
  • DB

Read more about what these Excel formulas do and how to use them properly. As a quick example, you can use VLOOKUP to find and return values in a tax table, while you can use ISPMT to calculate the amount of interest paid on your outstanding loans.

Also, handy for building your own income tax calculator spreadsheet is the IRS 1040 Tax and Earned Income Credit Tables [PDF].

However, these only cover tax reforms and structures.

If you contribute to a Roth IRA, for instance, you need to know the specific contribution limit for your tax status: IRS Roth IRA Limits. The same is true for student loan payments and interest, and so on.

Also, individual states have specific tax laws. Double-check local tax specifics using the FindLaw State Tax Law finder.

The IRS provides a comprehensive Tax Topic Index covering the major tax questions. The IRS website search function is useful, but as with government sites, it returns a lot of information. You may well have to do some sifting to find precisely what you need.

As with all things tax, it is highly likely another citizen has asked the same question!

Don’t Let Taxes Tax You

Taxes don’t have to be taxing. It happens every year, whether we like it or not, and paying tax is central to a functioning society.

Planning is the key to success. Keeping receipts, pay-slips, and statements in a single place will reduce your stress no end come April. And remember, you do have to pay taxes on earnings from sites such as eBay or Craigslist, as well as your cryptocurrency profits. As Ben Franklin had said,

“Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

The two templates provided are extensive. Excel1040 and Taxvisor will turn a tax nightmare into a dream so long as you have the correct information to work from. Please remember that these are only calculators. You still have to file your return!

How to Make a Box and Whisker Plot in Microsoft Excel

box-whisker-excel

If you work with data in Microsoft Excel, then creating a chart is a clean and attractive way to display that data. Excel offers many chart types from pie charts to bar graphs to line charts.

For working with statistical data, a box and whisker chart is the type you need. If you’ve never made one before, we’ll show you how to create a box and whisker plot in Excel, then double-check the calculations, and customize the chart for presentation.

What Is a Box and Whisker Plot?

A box and whisker plot, or box plot, is a chart that’s used to display a five-number summary of data. This type of chart works well for showing statistical data such as school grades or scores, before and after process changes, or similar situations for numerical data comparisons.

For more help on when to use which type of Excel chart type, check out our helpful guide.

When defining a box plot, here’s how Towards Data Science explains it:

A boxplot is a standardized way of displaying the distribution of data based on a five number summary (“minimum”, first quartile (Q1), median, third quartile (Q3), and “maximum”).

For viewing a box and whisker plot, the box shows the first quartile to the third quartile with a line through the center at the median. The whiskers go from each quartile to the minimum or maximum.

  • Minimum: The smallest value in a data set.
  • First quartile: The middle value between the Minimum and Median—25th percentile.
  • Median: The middle value of a data set.
  • Third quartile: The middle value the Median and the Maximum—75th percentile.
  • Maximum: The largest value in a data set.

Excel Box And Whisker Plot Explained

As with any other type of chart or graph in Excel, it all starts with your data. Open up the workbook and spreadsheet in Excel containing your data set. Then, follow the steps below to create the box and whisker plot.

  1. Select your data. Either click the first cell, hold down your mouse, and then drag through the rest of the cells or click the upper left cell, hold down the Shift key, and then click the bottom right cell.
  2. Click the Insert
  3. In the Chart section in the ribbon, click Insert Statistical Chart and select Box and Whisker.

Your new box and whisker plot will pop right into your spreadsheet.

Double-Check Your Box Plot Data

You can rely on Excel to plot your data with the correct numbers. However, if you prefer to double-check those numbers or just need them for yourself, you can do so quite easily with Excel’s built-in functions.

Excel Box and Whisker Plot Data Set

Head back to your data set and follow these instructions for finding the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum for your data set.

Minimum, Median, and Maximum Functions

When you add the function for the third quartile, you’ll follow the same steps as above, but enter the number 3 in the Quart box.

Customize Your Microsoft Excel Box and Whisker Plot

Now that you have your box and whisker plot, you can customize it with a variety of options, just like other charts in Excel. Select your box plot and a small menu will appear on the top right with buttons for Chart Elements and Chart Styles.

Chart Elements

This area allows you to select the elements of the chart you want to display such as axes, chart title, data labels, and a legend. And some of the elements let you drill down even further. For instance, if you want a legend, you can select the location it should display on the chart.
