Microsoft Can Look In Your Outlook Microsoft has the legal right to search through your emails, and it’s retaining that right despite user complaints. Language and Region Filters for Google Alerts

Google Alerts now lets you pick the language and region when creating an alert. For example, you can create an alert for "Chrome", but restrict it to French news articles from France. You don't have to set the region, the default setting is "any region".

The new filters are great for delivering more precise results, since you can restrict the results to a language, a country or both. You no longer have to use workarounds and switch to a different domain to get alerts in a different language. Please note that the text from the Google Alerts message will be in the language you've picked.

Google's Truncated Titles

The Google Search experiment that increased titles and removed underlines from links was quickly added to the regular search interface last week. Now it's no longer an experiment.

While I don't miss underlines, making titles bigger removes a few words from long titles and that's not a good thing. Here are some search results for [google maps api]:

* "Google Street View hack turns your city into a post-apocalypt..." (full title: "Google Street View hack turns your city into a post-apocalyptic jungle")

* "Google puts a limit on free Google Maps API: over 25,000 da..." (full title: "Google puts a limit on free Google Maps API: over 25,000 daily and you pay")

As you can see from these examples, only a few words are removed, but the truncated titles are difficult to understand.

Here's a side-by-side comparison between the new layout and the old one:

From what I know, Google has never displayed a few characters from a word in search results titles. Now it has to do this.

Why I Switched From Windows 7 To Elementary OS Luna

from-windows-linux

Bye bye, Windows. Hello, Linux! I have been a Windows user for 15 years now – unhappy with many of its ways, but not willing to give up what’s familar. The only time my computers saw an OS that was not Windows was during a short-lived Linux Mint installation and a failed Hackintosh attempt. But thanks to the Ubuntu-based Elementary OS Luna, I’ve given up Windows for good. What prompted me to try Luna? In what ways does it fare better than my previous OS, Windows 7? Why not a different Linux distro? Here are some answers. I Took The...

Gmail X Bug

There's an annoying bug in Gmail's desktop interface: a close button displayed at the bottom of the page in the right corner. If you click the small "x" icon, nothing happens. It looks like the buttons used in Gmail's panels for tasks, chat and composing messages.

There is a way to fix this issue. Bookmark this URL: http://ift.tt/1fJnIEZ and use it to open Gmail. This URL is used to load Gmail without enabling labs. Surprisingly, if you manually disable all the Gmail labs experiments, the close button is still there.

Another way to fix this issue is to install AdBlock/Adblock Plus and manually add this rule in the preferences:

mail.google.com##DIV[class="w-asK w-atd"]

Google is working on a fix.

Camera Voice Commands for Android

The Google Search app for Android added voice commands for taking photos and recording videos. Just say: "take a photo", "take a picture", "record a video", "take a video", "shoot a video" and the camera app will launch in the proper mode.

"The first home run in T-ball, the surprise proposal, or just that gorgeous sunset... Sometimes the perfect photo passes you by as you fumble with your phone to open the camera app. Now with the Google Search App on Android, you can just tap the microphone or say 'Ok Google,' then 'take a photo' or 'take a video'," informs Google.

Google Shows Related Topics

Google's Knowledge Graph boxes now include a list of related topics and some excerpts from articles about them. The related topics are usually linked from the corresponding Wikipedia article.

For example, when you search for [equilateral triangle], Google shows these related topics: Equilateral polygon, Square, Regular polygon, Pythagorean theorem.

You can search for [solve triangle], [area of a circle], [volume of a sphere], [perimeter of a trapezoid], [area of a pentagon], [hypotenuse calculator], [triangular prism volume], [calculate the diagonal of a cube with 6mm edge], [volume of a cylinder with radius 4cm and height 8cm], [a^2+b^2=c^2 calc a=4 b=7 c=?] and more.

Click the arrow and Google will show you the solution. Click one of the input boxes and the value is highlighted.

New Phishing Scam Uses Scarily Accurate Google Login Page

google-docs-phishing

You get a link to a Google Doc. You click it, then sign in to your Google account. Seems safe enough, right? Wrong, apparently. A sophisticated phishing setup is teaching the world yet another lesson about online security. What is phishing, and how do scammers use it? Basically, phishing means getting users to voluntarily type their username and password, often by using a false login page. Such pages are usually easy to spot for net-savvy users, but this recent example of phishing is noteworthy for how realistic the login page looked. It could have fooled just about anyone, and had...

Place Google Maps in the Background of your Contact Form

This is a demo of contact form that embeds a Google Map in the background. It isn’t using a static screenshot image of Google Maps in the background but the map is an interactive one — you can zoom in and out, drag the Pegman to turn on street view or even toggle between the Satellite view and the Maps view.

Contact Form with Google Maps

There are basically two layers on the page – one is the map and the other is the form – and we are using the z-index property of CSS to define the stack order. The form has a higher z-index than Google Maps and thus the latter appears in the background. Let’s look at the actual code now.

The HTML — There are two DIV elements – the map will render inside the element with ID #googlemaps while everything that you add inside #contactform will show up in your form. You can even embed a Google Form here.

<div id="googlemaps"></div>
<div id="contactform">
<!-- You can even embed a Google Form here -->
</div>

The CSS — The #googlemaps element occupies the entire height and width of the page while the #contactform has a fixed width. You can also change the opacity level of #contactform to make your forms slightly transparent.

#googlemaps {
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
position:absolute;
top: 0;
left: 0;
z-index: 0; /* Set z-index to 0 as it will be on a layer below the contact form */
}

#contactform {
position: relative;
z-index: 1; /* The z-index should be higher than Google Maps */
width: 300px;
margin: 60px auto 0;
padding: 10px;
background: black;
height: auto;
opacity: .45; /* Set the opacity for a slightly transparent Google Form */
color: white;
}

The JavaScript — Find the latitude and longitude of your place and replace the co-ordinates in line #7. You can then copy-paste the modified JavaScript code in the footer of your HTML page.

<!-- Include the Google Maps API library - required for embedding maps -->
<script src="http://ift.tt/MhUkIj;

<script type="text/javascript">

// The latitude and longitude of your business / place
var position = [27.1959739, 78.02423269999997];

function showGoogleMaps() {

var latLng = new google.maps.LatLng(position[0], position[1]);

var mapOptions = {
zoom: 16, // initialize zoom level - the max value is 21
streetViewControl: false, // hide the yellow Street View pegman
scaleControl: true, // allow users to zoom the Google Map
mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP,
center: latLng
};

map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('googlemaps'),
mapOptions);

// Show the default red marker at the location
marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: latLng,
map: map,
draggable: false,
animation: google.maps.Animation.DROP
});
}

google.maps.event.addDomListener(window, 'load', showGoogleMaps);
</script>

You may refer to the HTML source of this contact form for a complete example.
